I love the food culture. The eating out in restaurants. Its not something that happens that much in my own country with most people eating at home, and leaving restaurants for special occasions, or the fast food joints after the pub closes.
So.. for me.. it's hotpot. I love getting a group of friends and eating hotpot for a few hours. No rush. No need to eat and leave. And the variety of food available to go into it. Hell, I'm quite happy to go to hotpot alone with a good book, and I can settle there for a few hours.
Then, there's the street food scene. The barbecue places near the street, drinking beer and chatting with strangers. The stalls with everything from fried rice to burgers. It's fun, and has remained fun even after 14 years of doing it.
Plenty to like about living in China.

AxelllD -> Timely_Ear7464
Eating out cultures are so great, just makes a place so much more alive

Absence of the crazy religious.

I would say affordability, convenience (thanks to affordability) and food. I am also a sucker for huge cities and China got a lot of them.

Taobao as a one stop shop for literally anything will be sorely missed if/when I ever leave. Can't believe people are still going to different websites to order things back in my home country like a bunch of rubes.

Resident_Courage1354 -> MTRCNUK
How about food deliveries, maybe an extra couple yuan, but no Tipping!!
No Tipping is also another great one.
Seen so many video's of UberEat drivers taking back the food delivery because they didn't like the tip.
SadMurica.

takeitchillish -> Resident_Courage1354
Food delivery through apps is common in cities in Europe now as well. But China was very early with it. The difference is that China is so much cheaper

Resident_Courage1354 -> takeitchillish
Do you know if one needs or should tip in Europe?

takeitchillish -> Resident_Courage1354
No tip.

Ians-Life-in-China -> Resident_Courage1354
sheesh really wow taking back the food is a big low

Ians-Life-in-China -> MTRCNUK
haha yeah i totally understand that order taobao 3 days later a message saying the order arrived is the best feeling

Resident_Courage1354 -> Ians-Life-in-China
Same day delivery from JD, even better.

Resident_Courage1354
Having the confidence that I won't have a gun stuck in my face, nor have to dodge bullets anytime soon.

Ians-Life-in-China -> Resident_Courage1354
yeah so true china is such a nice safe country, in China, I know I can walk on the streets at 2 am in Belgium oh I wouldn't even try

Resident_Courage1354 -> Ians-Life-in-China
YEP,
And in the states, there are some streets and neighborhoods you don't wanna try, at ANY time of day.
Btw, Huiguorou is King. Lived in Sichuan many years.

MiskatonicDreams -> Resident_Courage1354
Every time I got to detroit, I tell her it looks like Bakhmut(Ukraine war zone) in some areas.

Resident_Courage1354 -> MiskatonicDreams
So many places man.
I used to go to skid row in los angeles over 30 years ago. Nothing has changed. American Capitalism run by the ruling class has no concern for the country except to make money of it's servants, while creating the culture war that too much of the voting public are mislead by.
America has its great parts, but for the wealth of what it is, the country could be sooo much better.

Open-Satisfaction-36 -> Ians-Life-in-China
Is it that bad in Belgium? Which city? In Berlin and other German cities people are out at all hours with no problems mostly

nomad_Henry -> Resident_Courage1354
most countries do not have this issue

lmvg -> Resident_Courage1354
Safety is undervalued but it's really great. It removed my anxiety of walking on streets at night.

SeaBass1944 -> Resident_Courage1354
Correct, you won't have to dodge bullets, just knife attacks.
If people are angry enough, they will find a way to inflict death and pain on others.

RichTheHaizi -> SeaBass1944
I’d rather fight a knife then a bullet. There’s ways to survive a knife fight with bare hands…not so much bullets.

Resident_Courage1354 -> RichTheHaizi
Yep, there's absolutely no comparison and quite simply a ridiculous objection.

Your_Hmong
Not just the food, but the dining culture. Eat around a huge table and share food. Stay and drink beer as long as you want, no one will bring you a bill. Waiters are present (usually, lol) but don't hover or try to check on you too much. Rarely have to wait on a table. No tipping. At the end, its usually affordable and you can sometimes be like "dinner's on me" and pay the whole thing (don't try doing that in the states lol). Get a private room. All in all a cheaper and more relaxed way to have a great meal with company.

Ians-Life-in-China -> Your_Hmong
so true the whole experience is so nice

Public transportation, not wasting my life in a car anymore.

genghis-san -> Onehothalpino
Yep, Canada and the US focus too much on expanding suburbs, while China focuses on expanding cities. City life is way way better than suburb life. Even suburbs in China are often still connected by some type of public transportation.

SmasherOfAjumma -> genghis-san
City life is way way better than suburb life.
No way I'm giving up my private back yard and my vegetable garden for life in the city.

shenbilives -> Onehothalpino
It’s amazing how you can take a clean, safe subway around one city, hop on a high-speed train to another city, then take a clean safe subway there. The transportation network in China is incredible.

Ians-Life-in-China -> Onehothalpino
true that the metro system is so good in China and then the high-speed trains are just amazing as well the other day I took a trip to Chengdu from Guiyang and was only 4 hours on the train so nice

Onehothalpino -> Ians-Life-in-China
Might have to steal this idea this summer.

No violence. Happy people. Good fresh and cheap food, clothing, and living costs. Safe environment is #1. I love living in a police state, if that's what this is called.

pierrotPK
Safety, cycling lanes (here in BJ), very nice parks, convenience (kuaidi, shops/restaurants opening hours), reliable public transports

No_Document_7800
convenience - i could order something sunday night and it would get here in a day or so.

Ians-Life-in-China -> No_Document_7800
facts

事实

shenbilives -> No_Document_7800
Often, it’s less than a day. I’ll order something on JD in the evening and get it in the morning.

shaghaiex
I am only a frequent visitor - my very favorite part is the food, Chinese food that is. And maybe Korean food. And there the sub-groups Hunan and Sichuan.
Certain aspects of shopping are great too. Mainly glasses. In Shanghai one can get prescrlption glasses within 20 Minutes.
And then random stuff - left a factory last week, just in a front of it was a truck loaded with walnuts. Drivers was sleeping, but was happy to sell me for 8/jin (500g I think). I mean, where else in the world you can find walnut trucks?

chell_lander -> shaghaiex
Oh can you recommend a place? I need to get my eyes tested and get new glasses. There's glasses places all over but I don't know how to choose one.

Living in a different culture teaches you so much, not just about the local culture but also your own.
