Bullies never pick on the strong. Or bullies only pick on the weak.
And bullies rarely have an agenda besides maintaining their bully status.
In case it wasn’t clear, the bully in this scenario is Trump and the strong is China. While China does some bullying of its own, in this scenario the US is the bigger bully. China is not as strong globally as the US and may never be but China is not a country to be played with like Mexico or those non-threat countries that Trump has tried banning people from. China is a complicated matter for anyone to deal with. Trump should know it’s the US that benefits most from its trade with China, Mexico and Canada. He should further know that it’s the US that suffers most without these trading partners. But he campaigned to be tough on trade for unsubstantiated populist reasons. So he picks on the weaker of the non-evil trading partners and that's Mexico. He surely can’t pick on Canada. Everyone likes Canada.

There is over $600 billion dollars worth of trade between China and the US, most of it involves imports into the US which the US cannot survive long or well without. It’s not just plastic spoons and cups, it’s major electronics and electronic parts, it’s auto parts, it’s steel… It’s not just things that an average family needs daily. It’s things that the average american company needs. Basically a lot of the companies in the US that have american employees need trade to stay in business.
That big trade amount is connected to trillions of $ of US GDP. And those trillions of $ of US GDP are connected to thousands of US companies and millions of US jobs. It's the same for Mexico but on a smaller scale.
In most scenarios, China easily survives a trade war with the US. China imports little from the US. China can scale down exports, increase exports to other and new trading partners and stockpile while US citizens and US corporations quickly turn on their government because so many goods become scarce, expensive and/or low quality.

It’s not like China or Mexico or Canada stole jobs. The US is a wealthy country because of trade. It has always had low unemployment. It is far wealthier than it was 10, 20 or 40 years ago. And so are its trading partners. That’s how trade works. Just because the US doesn’t build its own televisions or phones doesn’t mean there’s a big problem. It’s like wealthy people who don’t mow their own lawns.
If you think these jobs were stolen from the US and need to come back, then someone is lying to you and you are mistaken. Most of these jobs never existed in the US. Do you think your cell phone or television was ever made in the US?
These are not jobs that Americans want to do or can do. You like your televisions, telephones and cheap clothing and you don’t want to have to start making them yourself and have them cost 10 to 20 times as much. Imagine your phone or television costing thousands instead of hundreds. Or even the most basic clothing like underwear and t-shirts costing $50 dollars.

There’s always going to be particular trade cases that need fixing. Trade always requires some oversight. But with way over a trillion and a half dollars of trade between the US and those three countries each year, it is literally the most successful trade pact the US or the world has ever seen. And it greatly benefits the US. If you like your life in the US, then you love your trading partners.
Keep in mind that Great Britain became great because of trade, more importantly, because of free trade.
China also owns over a trillion dollars worth of US treasury debt. China might want it all back one day. If they decide to dump it and/or stop buying it, it could easily start a selloff and big drop in the value of US treasury, giving the US difficulties in finding money to simply run their government. Default becomes a possibility. Again, in this scenario, US citizens and US corporations quickly turn on their government. China also owns a fantastic amount of other forms of US debt. It’s not just the owning part. It’s the consistently buying more part that helps fund the US government. But China wouldn’t do that because it is a good trading partner and by hurting the US it is hurting itself.
Japan also owns over a trillion dollars worth of US treasury debt.

Basically, every single american owes over $3000 to each country. That's every man, woman and child. Every american person owes three Chinese persons about $1000 dollars. It’s a very simplistic view of US Treasury holdings but you get the idea.
And it is likely that these and other countries will eventually take some kind of economic and perhaps strategic advantage of the poor leadership in the White House. So not only Trump should be scared but every American should be scared.
Also, China is exercising more influence in the Asian region and this is a region the US has dominated since the end of WWII. China will probably never have a military that can challenge the military of the US but it can easily defend it’s borders and, as the largest military force in the region, potentially deal with any conflicts among its near neighbors.

None of this should be surprising to an American. Look around you. How much of things you use are made elsewhere? Even if they're made in the US, the parts probably were made elsewhere. It's been like this for a long time and it's one of the major reasons life in the US is pretty easy and nice compared to most of the world. Do you really want to go to factory everyday and make curling irons all day the rest of your life? Or have your kids grow up to work in a factory making electric fans all day the rest of their lives? And do you want those curling irons and electric fans to cost 10 times as much? You want better than that. Think about it.
Politicians just want your vote and they are willing to scare you about things that aren't true or that they can't or won't fix. Trump is doing just that. Do some research. Do some thinking. And figure out some things on your own.

For instance, Trump scaring you that refugees are going to come in and cause terrorist attacks and need to be banned. No refugee has ever committed a terrorist attack on US soil, ever. Refugees have been coming in for decades and the US refugee vetting system is very extensive.
Another for instance, since 9/11, there have been about 3300 deaths from terrorist attacks on US soil. This includes 9/11 and many terror attacks not related to Islam. In the same time period, there have been over 400,000 deaths caused by gun violence. If you caught all the terrorists before they caused harm, which is hard because you don't easily know who they are, you could have saved about 3300 people. If you banned guns, you could have saved over 400,000 people. Simple math.
Think for yourself. Stop letting others scare you into not thinking.

Trump is clearly still acting the bully and, as expected, attempting to bully China. With no actual plan in place or any solid reasons to bully China, Trump continues to attempt to provoke China while, at the same time, attempting to rabble rouse his supporters while playing to their ignorance of how a global economy works. Tariffs are effectively taxes on people in the United States buying things from China. Mostly Americans. My guess is that most Americans don’t realize this (including Trump!).
China simply has to wait him out because he is clearly just swinging blindly
Trump continues to escalate a trade war with China and, as expected, the markets are starting to get annoyed by it and money is flowing out. his supporters will start to clear out.
China is just beginning to use it’s significant trading abilities to counteract Trump’s senseless, political trade wars.
China can due its currency. stop buying US debt, move trading to other partners and a variety of other things to pressure the US to be a good trading partner again.

With the advent of time, global geopolitical discourse is increasingly getting shifted towards and driven by economics rather than military or hard power dimension. So far USA maintained its grip over world order using combination of hard power and its excellent economic credentials being the largest economy in the world.
However global geopolitical narrative is undergoing transformation at unprecedented pace. In shaping of world order, economics is assuming primacy over military strength or hard power dimension.
According to recent report of IMF, China has surpassed USA as largest GDP in the world. According to IMF estimates, Chinese GDP (in PPP terms) stands at US $ 23 trillion whereas USA’s GDP (in PPP terms) is US $ 19 trillion. (Source : Report for sexted Countries and Subjects). When calculated on nominal GDP terms, USA’s GDP stands at US $ 18.5 trillion whereas Chinese GDP is estimated worth US $ 11.4 trilion. According to IMF estimates, GDP growth rate of China is approximately 6.90% whereas for USA it is just 2.60%.

In terms of investments outside the country, China is rapidly enhancing its footprint in hitherto unexplored regions like Africa and Latin America. It is attempting to bolster its ties across the world through generous investments and transfer of technologies. One Belt One Road project encompassing more than 60 countries in the world , is clearly a symbol of China’s ambition to unleash its economic dominance over the world.
Though Chinese military capabilities are nowhere match to that of USA’s but when China and Russia combined, it definitely reach near to USA’s military and defence capabilities. Russia has higher number of nuclear weapons than USA. Presently USA has 38 operational overseas military bases located across length and breadth of the world. In comparison to this Russia has roughly 10 overseas military bases mostly located in earstwhile USSR countries. But China is aggressively acquiring military bases across Indian Ocean. Its doctrine of string of pearls is case in point. In addition to this its assertive behaviour in South China Sea and East China Sea underscores its ambition to assume larger role in Pacific ocean.

US-China bilateral trade, according to 2015 statistics, stands at whooping US $ 659 billion, with trade balance in favour of China. US trade deficit with China is of extremely high order amounting to US $ 336 billion. (Source : The People's Republic of China). In case China decides to declare trade embargo on USA, it might cripple US economy.
Due to all these factors, China is poised to replace USA as global hegemon in near foreseeable future. Right now, a picture is emerging where China and USA are getting involved in “Thucydides Trap”. Donald Trump’s administration is cognizant of power and clout that China presently wields over world order and global geopolitics. Any conflict of serious scale with China would be detrimental to political economy of USA. Hence US administration under presidency of Donald Trump is harbouring cautious approach with regards to China.

He, like many american are suffering a case of sinophobia. It doesn’t matter that their part of liberal, conservitive, democrat, republican, progressive or alt right they all dislike of the chinese. This is nothing new however, sinophobia has happen for hundreds of years and is unlikely to change anytime soon.
The truth is China hasn’t really done anything other than purchasing the things the U.S has sold to them over the years. In a moral stand point China is full in right for purchasing and taking those jobs. Sure it have might screw over americans but it is not China duty or responsibility for the U.S incompetence in managing their country. If the U.S goverment has manage their economy from manufacturing to service better then they would not be in this pitable state their in right this moment. The U.S goverment has been rather wasteful of it’s resources and their sturbborn political bearucraccy has stop any major or meaningful reform. If U.S was a Chinese dynasty I would say this may be their signs of their decay into chaos.

I know Americans like to say that the globalism are evil and bad etc but I believe that is misguided and ignorant of this complex issue. Truthfull I think the globalist the american rants about should be refer as coporate imperialism. Often then not these coporate entity do not have the best intrest at heart and often strong arm many nation into giving them more cash.

He should. USA lost Korean War to Red China when Red China was still an infant and USA was an superpower at its summit after WWII. USA lost Vietnam War when Red China was still a youth.
Now Red China is a mature vigorous man, and USA is old superpower. USA never win Red China from the very beginning. USA always lost to Red China regardless how weak was Red China and how strong was USA.
Some think tanks and strategists argue that USA will defeat China on South China Sea; however, they forget that all these calculations based on military advantage of US failed on Chinese Civil War, Korean War, and Vietnam War. All their calculations does not work on Red China. When US against China, it seems that they are against God’s will.
God bless America that Trump will not do some stupid things on Red China. God help Trump that he will not do something as stupid as against Red China. Trump should be afraid of China, or he is risking US’ fate on a losing bet.

Why is Donlad Trump so afraid of China?
I don’t think he is afraid of China. I think he just finally has the backbone to stand up to China. Bush had the backbone but not the brains, Obama had the brains but not the backbone to confront China. Trump might have both — but its a very delicate situation — and any trade war could end up hurting both parties involved.
His tough stance against trade fits perfectly with his populist rhetoric. He’s a “people person” — and saying that China has stolen the people’s jobs is something that people in the rust belt states (Midwest) will get fired up about. While China has, indeed, hurt the US manufacturing sector — I’m really not sure if that’s what he should be targeting. China is now starting to lose manufacturing jobs to other countries in Asia as their labor becomes more expensive.

If you believe him, you’ll be living in fear. Fear makes people vulnerable, so he can manipulate you to do whatever he wants.

Donald Trump sees the world as a Zero sum game. Any gain in power, prestige, wealth or happiness takes away from a finite supply, and denies the rest of the players a portion.
China is a major and growing power. He can only understand the world in a way that sees there gain as our loss.
Of course, that perspective is absurd. The very concept of an economy relies entirely on the idea that any sort of deal, exchange, purchase or trade fundamentally creates wealth, and contributes to the size of the overall proverbial pie. If it didn’t, we would all be living in mud huts hideing from lions.
The simple answer is that Donald Trump is not a bright man.

If things go his way but his way is the same as the old way, he gets credit. win win. Same story with that damn wall. Same trick when Soviet unx can't find a better excuse to execute party members so just blame them as American spies. Just to feed something to an angry public. If you look up some history, this is a trick that never fails in secure a good position for politicians or political groups, as well as make things really nasty for everybody in the end.

In more reality, Trump’s real motivation came from China’s diplomacy.
