India will be keen to buy a newly unveiled Russian stealth fighter to help counter China’s forces.
Earlier this week the Russian aircraft maker Sukhoi unveiled a prototype of its new “Checkmate” jet at the MAKS-2021 International Aviation and Space Salon.The maker highlighted its stealth abilities and relatively low cost, which is expected to be a major selling point internationally.

Sukhoi said the fifth-generation fighter had a top speed of Mach 2 and an operational range of 3,000km (1,865 miles) and a payload of 7.4 tonnes.
It is expected to make its maiden flight in 2023 and deliveries could start in 2026. Russia plans to produce 300 of the planes over 15 years to replace its depleted fighter squadrons.
Details of the technology used in the planes have yet to be made public, but Wei Dongxu, a Beijing-based military analyst, said its aerodynamic design suggested it has better stealth capabilities than the Sukhoi Su-57, Russia’s first fifth-generation fighter which entered service in December last year.

China’s J-20 fighters have been deployed along the disputed border with India.

Only three other fifth-generation fighters are in service, China’s Chengdu J-20 and Lockheed Martin’s F-22 and F-35 from the United States. The F-35 Lightning II is the only stealth fighter available for export, but sales are limited to US allies.
Heavy demand for the planes also means there is a backlog, because Lockheed Martin’s production lines can only deliver between 100 and 200 a year.
The Checkmate will cost US$25-30 million, according to Sergei Chemezov, chief of Russia’s state aerospace and defence conglomerate Rostec – a significant price advantage over the F-35, which costs at least US$100 million.

Chemezov said the Checkmate was expected to be in demand from countries in the Middle East, the Asia-Pacific and Latin America.
The most likely buyer of the Checkmate is India, which is a major buyer of Russian warplanes, according to Song Zhongping, a Chinese military commentator.
“The sales of stealth fighters are very political and still largely based on the political divide,” he said.
India had reportedly been in discussions with Lockheed Martin about buying the F-35, but did not go ahead with the deal. However, it is eager to acquire a fifth-generation fighter following last year’s border stand-off with China.

After a deadly clash, China deployed its J-20s to front-line airfields, but the best response India could make was its French-made Dassault Rafales – a 4.5 generation fighter.
Song said it was too early to predict what would happen if India acquired a stealth fighter.
Another impact will probably be on China’s FC-31, another fifth-generation stealth fighter which is still under development intended for the international market.
This jet has broadly similar specifications to the F-35, and has undergone several modifications since its maiden flight in 2012. It is not known what the price will be.
“In general, Russia has advantages in its jet engine and the unique features of the fighter’s aerodynamic design. But its avionics and fire control systems are relatively backward,” Song said.

By the time the plane would be ready for export and India could get it might be about 10 years.  By then the border issue will have hopefully been dealt with.  In any event if China continues to grow stronger it wouldn't matter anyway.

The F35 is more than just a jet fighter, it is an integrated electronic warfare aircraft functioning as part of a battle group. Highly likely India would acquire the F35 as it would want to fight along side with other QUAD countries.

India should spent its resources on improving its people's livelihood like health, infrastructure and farming. All this millitary spending to counter China and geopolitical plays is money wasted. Its nice to get the Indian population feeling we are strong and important country, but in the longer run, if you dont improve and grow India's economy consistently, India will be a wannabe superpower for decades to come.
China has its hand full with USA and the other western countries for many years to come and an astute Indian government will want to discuss settlement on border demarcation at this time with China quietly and peacefully.
Posturing and having grand strategic plans to show China who's boss is short term feel good only.

Depending on other nations' military equipment for defense is no defense at all. It takes no time for the US or the Russian to deny access to their navigation system or spare parts to disable the purchased equipment. This has happened before.

USA is an unreliable partner. I can quote more examples from recent past of what it did to its allies.

Assuming that India has the interest and the funding to buy the Russian jet, will Russia sell it to India? Russia needs to weigh the possibility that the US will take a peek at it, given India’s membership of QUAD. India’s modus operandi when buying foreign jets, as in the purchase of the French Rafale, is to buy a couple of jets directly, and have the rest assembled in a factory in India, preferably one runs by one of Modi's cronies.

@Syed M. You look at the world in a simplistic way. First of all, India is not China's enemy. Even US is not China's enemy. Secondly, Russia has always supplied India with military equipment. So why should they stop? Russia's relationship with China is a strategic one but they are not military ally and both countries have said so. Maybe it's good for you to be more informed so that you don't get too agitated.

@Syed M. Strange argument u hv - Russian had been selling arms globally since the Cold War and India had been its loyal customer since its formation. The only real "friend" in any relation is being honest with oneself, which India for a long time has trouble looking into the mirror.

@Syed M. it's all business. Just like China has strong relationships with Ukrain which is Russia's enemy. China will not sanction Russia for selling arms to India whereas US will sanction India for buying oil from Iran and acquiring S-400 anti-missiles system from Russia.

I think you are over simplifying things a bit. The moment India uses these latest Russian stealth fighters jets to kill Chinese soldiers and assets up on the Line Of Control skirmishes in the North Eastern Himalayas, China won't have any strategic or military partnership with Russia to speak of!  It's just an illusion. There is a limited economic relationship which I would argue that China will also start taking a hard look at that as well

India has indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) – TEJAS – AF MK1. This is a 4.5 generation single seat multirole fighter aircraft.
We therefore need to purchase 5th gen fighters until we finally develop and manufacture them ourselves.

It is great China and Russia Governments have consolidated excellent “Political and Economic Partnership” over the last few years, and now Russia is getting both the “recognition of advance Russian fighter jet and purchasing order” from India Government. However Russian Government should not sell the latest model of its Checkmate to Indian Government just in case it is being used as a trojan horse by the current double standard country trying to steal this Russian stealth fighter technology. Since last year after Indo-China clashes on Galwan valley India is buying many military equipments. e.g. S-400 from Russia, 30 MQ 9 Reaper drones from USA, 6 stealth submarines under construction, 34 Raphel under delivery, 10 Poseidon, 24 Romeo Helicopters and many more etc. But these works as a deterrent to an enemy and not necessarily to wage a war.

The reason India can't develop planes is all down to it's culture of disunity. When hiring staff, it's not a question of who can get the job technically done. It's a question of which clan, caste, sect, religion you belong to. Hiring on merit is lost amongst all that chatter. Getting anything large-scale completed becomes a miracle.
