The simple answer to this question is NO.
Although, France have a strong military and advance technology to defend their own country, against any other major country. France also has quite a few foreign military bases, which are strategically located in different parts of the world.
But, look at the other side of the coin. China has a huge military of more than 3 million. The military of china once defeated the UN army. Now China has a foreign military base in djibouti (in africa). And let me remind you that china has the world largest navy that can project power in europe also. Also the nation has self developed high technology war plans. China wealth reserve is so big to handle a big war for a long period of time.
In Short, it is clear that France alone can’t defeat China in any way.

Going into deep analysis, China’s military budget is yearly 215 billion dollors which is only 2 % of the gdp of the nation. and when we look at france budget, it is only 56 billion dollors which is more than 2 % of their economy. This means that when a war goes china has higher support from its gdp as compared to france. As, we know that both of these nation are very far from each other, their navy and airforce will have the key role to play. If we compare their airforce power it is clear that china has a clear advantage, because china has more than 3 times the number of total aircraft, france has. In case of navy also, china has a huge gap as it has more than 5 times the total naval force of france. China has a lot of submarines, that would be pivot in this kind of war.
Now, in situation of war, a major problem that a nation faces is lack of fuel supply. In that case also ,china has a huge proven oil reserve. it can be used in an emergency situation like war. One of the major advantage if a nation posses, will give a huge advantage over the enemy is the size of the nation. here also china is far ahead of france, as france is more than 10 time smaller than china.

As a proud French people, I would be tempted to trust the power of our army and say yes. But things are slightly more complicated.
* First let’s check the overrall budget and troops. China has a troop capacity of 2 000 000 soldiers and a budget of 240 billions dollars. France, however, has only 300 000 soldiers and a budget of 40.5 billions EUROS (~50 billions USD). In terms of overrall power, France shouldn’t be able to stand against China.

Yes, unlike many countries in the world, it’s impossible to consider nowadays any of our neighbours betraying us by helping a foreign army to invade France. Even if we go on strike very often, we don’t hate our country enough to betray it in case of war.

Just check how many outland operations are currently ran outside the national soil: overseas, in middle-east, Africa…
* One of the most important things I haven’t read in other answers: NUCLEAR WEAPONS. France and China both own nuclear weapons and I don’t know how China manages their arsenal, but the French army have nuclear submarines all around the world, ready to strike ANYWHERE, ANYTIME. Even in case of a sudden and total destruction of the home country (remember France also has territories all around the globe, for instance French Polynesia covers a land roughly equal to Europe’s superficy), the French President would be able to strike back.

Just in terms of economic strength, EU is the second economic power in the world, far away from China. Plus, China’s economy is mostely driven by exportations to the EU. In case of a war, it makes no doubt that a European embargo would appear, privating China of enormous amount of money. But France is also part of NATO, which regroupes the US, Turkey, Australia, Japan… Which gives plenty of opportunities to France to strike on China’s soil, or count on countless allies all around the world.

As a conclusion, I’ll say that a war between China and France IS NEVER GONNA HAPPEN. France no longer can decide to attack a country on his own like it used to, because of the approval of EU and the UN. Same thing for China : they would require the UN approval, and do remember that both country at the UN Security Council. Moreover, both countries have way too many economical reasons to be partners rather than ennemies: France imports every year for almost 46 billions USD from China, and invest in China 43 billions USD. With more than 1,100 French companies established in China, France is probably the first European economic partner of China.

It depends heavily on the nature of the conflict. Is France invading China? Then probably not, because France’s military could probably supply only a tiny-sized force, when compared with the PLA. But if China is invading France, then the reverse is true, in fact, the Chinese force would likely not even reach French soil before being attacked and sunk by French naval and Air Force planes.
* Is it a naval clash? Then it depends on where the conflict takes place, whose bases are closer, who has the element of surprise. Naval and Air Force conflicts are more often decided by technological factors than, say, insurgencies or other ground conflicts, and this probably favors France, though we don't really know what surprises each nation has, nor what capabilities they have neglected.

* Is it a short conflict? Then it depends on all sorts of transient factors, such as who is better prepared for the exact circumstances of the clash — is it a submarine ambush? An air-raid on a port?
* Is it an extended clash ? Then it depends more on logistics — who can supply troops, and for longer. This can depend on proximity to the home base, and the cooperation of local allies.
The thing that makes the question odd is that France and China have no points of friction that I can think of, anywhere in the globe, so it is nearly impossible to come up with a plausible scenario for this fight. We are reduced to the vague bromides above.
I am thinking of asking a similar question about Guatemala and Bhutan.

While their current relations appear friendly enough, they are both heavily engaged in Africa. Give it a couple of years and there might be a situation where China tries to displace France as the primary overseas partner of a formerly French colony, with France not agreeing, or one such ex-colony gets into a heated situation with a neighbor that was never a French colony, where China already is very powerful. Given a high enough value of whatever rare raw material is extracted from the place in question, it might get heated.

Good point. If the fight is in North Africa, then the proximity to France gives them the edge, IMO. China has no bases in the area, its navy is mostly local to home base, France’s navy is pretty good, they have many more local allies. France’s special forces looked like they did pretty good against jihadists in Mali, and as a result France has recent experience and buildup of logistics, there. China is relatively untested.

Did not know about that one, good catch. That provides a real, plausible point of friction between them. The base makes it easier for China. But I believe France also has a base there, so logistically it would be about even, if something were to break out there between France and China, and the US did not help. And then I would expect France’s greater experience both building and operating naval and aircraft assets to tell.

Let's be realistic, france is a nato country so the us would assist.
But if you look at purely a china v france war/event then the logistic is about the same.
The Chinese also have a navy base in Pakistan with is actually quite close to there African base, its a short trip via air or sea to reinforce.
Now war between the 2 is very unlikely however if you look at the complete mix of assets both governments could bring to bare on each other im afraid the french dont stand a chance.
You also have to take into consideration the fact that china has built and owns a massive amount of rail infastructure in the continent.
Im not against the french, there lovely people and have a fine military however they lack the depth, economy and manufacturing capability to defeat china on there own without allies.

It depends. France is an extremely powerful country that can defend its territories from major global powers like America, Russia, and China. They have military bases all around that can be used to assist their war effort. China is also an extremely powerful country. I think it depends on where this war is fought. I highly doubt France would attempt to invade China alone, and I doubt China’s military could even reach France let alone invade it. Now if this is a naval battle, it depends on where it is fought. I think France would still have the edge. The only real points of conflict I can think of are in Africa and the South China sea. I’ve heard it mentioned several times that France wants to start patrolling the South China sea alongside America and Britain does as well. That could start conflict. In Africa, both nations are deeply entangled. At some point, they could see one another as enemies because I believe they both want to be the dominant power in the region. If it is a South China sea naval battle, I would say a stalemate. If its in Africa, I would give France the overall edge.

Morally, French are more willingly to surrender than Chinese.
Technically, I am not following all of France’s recent military build-up (if there are any), but I don’t think France has any advantage. For example, France cannot make stealth jets like China’s J-20 on its own.
Geographically, let’s assume they are neighbors.
And, China has much larger manpower.
If France thought they alone could defeat countries like China, they wouldn’t need to rejoin NATO.

As I agree with the conclusion, I can see that you are poorly informed about the stealth technology French capability, the reason of France joining the NATO and also about the J-20, which is far from the best stealth fighter.
So, just to help you know more about it, the J-20 is not more discreet than the Rafale. They both have a RCS of 1m2.
Then after, it’s tricky to compare all the electronics that are classified and would make the difference on a battlefield.
But the J-20 is not as good as you think.

Now let’s say one side of the government decided this would be fun, now we face the second thing to consider, where? In France? No, i do not think that France can defeat China in modern warfare. Historically, France isn’t really good at wars after Napoleon. In WW2, they lost to Germany even though the Brits helped them.
