I remember the 2016 election, when Donald Trump ran against Hillary Clinton and won a baffling victory. I was watching it at my college dorm in the well-known blue state of California. Like most liberals, I thought “Oh No! The world is going to end!”. I wasn’t very familiar with US Politics back then. And today, four years later, my understanding of the world has matured a lot more. This time, in the 2020 election, I tried not to get too emotional about who wins because there isn’t really much of a difference between Democrats and Republicans. Both are pretty right-wing, but Democrats are slightly more decent because they believe in things like making College more affordable and giving everyone Universal Healthcare.

And contrary to popular opinion, US is not rolling out a red carpet for immigrants. In fact, I have met a fair number of Trump supporters who were Asian-Americans (they were themselves children of immigrants but they were worried that America is accepting way too many people than it can sustain). The US has had high levels of immigration only because of plutocratic influence of the 1%, not because of democratic majority support. All these liberal slogans are just to recruit more rats to run on treadmills— corporations love to dangle the green card carrot to make Indian/Chinese techies dance to their tune. In some ways, immigrants to US and other western countries are the Rice Christians of todays era. As a general rule, do not expect an invitation from Westerners until your second/third generation in the country. Despite Trump’s persona, he managed to get the second highest number of votes of any American politician in history— this tells us a lot about the current state of the United States. So I’m sure that most of the world feels great that a maniac like Trump is no longer in charge of the White House. But its worth mentioning that Trump has said some dumb things, but he hasn't really done anything close to Fascism. The Nazi Party in Germany literally controlled the media while they exterminated Jews. Trump on the other hand, is criticized by the news outlets and trolled heavily in social media everyday. If you look at India, our PM who ran the election on a Hindu Nationalist agenda, is directly involved in the deaths of hundreds of Muslims (look up Gujarat riots). In the West, any hint of fascism sets off alarm bells in people’s heads and for good reason, but not in a place like India. We cannot afford to be decadent and lost like most of today’s western society. Whatever happens from this US election, we can be sure that the glory days of US Foreign Policy or US as an arbiter are over. The US has, even with a close Biden victory, voted away their privileges, much like the UK did with Brexit. They will pay the price over decades. It's up to the EU now to get their game together. If they can, they will counterbalance China and eventually India.

America has been seen as an utter joke for the past four years. I feel sorry for you. I don’t know how you can live there, with your lack of affordable healthcare, your failing postal service, your crazy gun laws and your apparent institutional racism, all of which would appear to have gotten much, much worse on Trump’s watch. But you keep screaming that Biden and the Democrats are “socialists” when you don’t even know what the word means.
We are not interested in your chlorinated chicken or your private health insurance. We are sick of the utter, barefaced lies that Trump has spread about us. We were sick of his attempting to interfere in our politics. We were disgusted at his disrespectful treatment of the Queen.

I did find it somewhat amusing that Trump behaved, and is still behaving, like a petulant toddler who has been told “no” for the first time ever. His daft pissing competitions about “my wife’s hotter than yours” were risible and abhorrent in equal measure. His juvenile name-calling of his opponents and frankly, lunatic tweets were also risible and shocking in equal measure. I quite often had to look and check just to make sure that I was actually looking at Trump and not an episode of Beavis and Butthead.
When Joe Biden was elected I breathed a huge sigh of relief, I don’t envy him his task one bit. Already he has people making fun of his age, making fun of his stammer, calling him Sleepy Joe, and predicting that he’ll die before very long. If that’s the sort of abhorrent, adolescent behaviour that you have learned from your President then you are every bit as bad as he is, and you don’t deserve a decent man in charge who says he is going to represent you all. At least Joe Biden sounds like a statesman, Trump just sounds like a nasty little adolescent bully who has never grown up. He made a laughing stock of all of you and some of you still don’t even realise it.

A few days ago, I wrote that my level of respect for the United States was unaffected. But that was a few days ago. I’m not sure if I can say the same this time. I am extremely disappointed in the United States right now and I am wondering if it deserves the degree of respect I currently have for it.
It isn’t even just this election but it’s the events of the past 18 months or so which have opened my eyes to even more disturbing truths about the US which I wasn’t fully aware of at the time (and am probably still naively unaware of). I thought that my level of respect for the US, it’s people and its institutions was at the lowest it could fairly and reasonably be. But this election as well as some experiences over the past 18 months (which this election is forcing me to reflect on) is telling me that I can justifiably lose more respect for the US. But I’ll maintain my respect at its current level.

First off, something is deeply wrong with the United States’ electorate. It’s unbelievable that so many voters (and at a time of record turnout) voted for Donald Trump despite all his failures, vileness, corruption, exposed dishonesty and complete lack of regard for anyone but himself. Donald Trump was no fluke in 2016. He was (and still is) a symptom of a disturbing and threatening ideology brewing in the United States. I can no longer blame his near-victory on low Democratic turnout or people’s unawareness of how vile he truly is. The harsh reality is that so many American voters just don’t give a damn about the threat he poses to democracy, their health and their international reputation. Trump supporters might not be a monolith of racist, sexist homophobes (or other intolerant people). But in order to vote for Trump for any reason this year, voters had to overlook way too many of his disturbing qualities and past actions (even those whose impacts are still punching them in the face). Even if you believe Biden is some socialist (who supposedly will inevitably turn the US into a poverty-stricken Stalinist dictatorship), I don’t get how the heck you can overlook Trump’s own authoritarian tendencies when it’s time to vote. So people would rather have Trump than socialism (even if Biden could be accurately described as the socialist he isn’t in reality)? People would rather risk Trump’s authoritarianism than pay extra taxes or to be given a public option healthcare plan (or any form of universal healthcare for that matter)? To think that there was once a time when I used to believe that American voters were a lot better than this (though in recent years, I’m not too surprised by things like this).

I wouldn’t say that I lost respect for the US because of the way it responded to the COVID pandemic. I’m confident that if Clinton had won the presidency in 2016, at least 100,000 of the current COVID fatalities would not have occurred. The US would be showing just how robust its CDC and disease control institutions are. But what if I’m wrong? I was wrong about how easy it would be for Biden to win the election. I was wrong about how there would be bipartisan support to impeach Trump in a manner similar to Nixon (that was my 2014 or so belief, not the belief I held at the time of impeachment where I wasn’t surprised they’d condone Trump). Who’s to say I’m not wrong about how much less disastrous this pandemic would be if someone else was president? Nah, that’s crazy talk, I’m not wrong.

Anyway, this election is just yet another reminder of how the US is not as great as I used to believe it was. Trump’s term in office is a reminder of that. Various Quora answers written by disgruntled American expats (and locals) speaking about certain toxic aspects of American culture (which I had never noticed on my numerous visits nor during my yearlong period of residency there) also remind me of how much I overestimated so many positive qualities I once associated with the US. Up until 2020, despite everything else I’ve previously mentioned, I NEVER would have thought that Americans (more like certain groups of Americans) would be acting the way they currently are about lockdowns and masks. I was naive enough to think that the threat would be obvious enough for people to comply with social distancing, lockdowns and mask mandates. I was naive enough to think this time of crisis would bring people together and even help the more right-wing folk to understand the importance of working together and the role of government intervention in keeping people safe. I thought it would be similar to that time I got caught in the middle of an American natural disaster and the entire community seemed eager to work together sandbagging and helping each other out wherever they could. Well, I was dead wrong.
I’m waffling on here. Long story short, the outcome of this election can just be added to the long list of things which made me realize just how much I had previously underestimated how deeply ill American society is and just how far removed America (it’s society, political institutions, culture, etc) is from what I once believed it to be. Overall, I still don’t feel any loss of respect for the United States. Despite all these problems, there’s still a significant fraction of good people in the US (some of them are even exceptionally decent people). There are so many decent people, non-government organizations full of decent people (also supported and financed by similarly decent people), etc. They’re doing the best they can. They believe in the type of America I once thought to exist. Their presence in the US and ongoing active efforts to change things for the better, makes America deserving of my respect. The presence of THAT particular (decentralized) American community makes it difficult for me to lose any respect for the US, no matter what happens.

So, I’m from Indonesia, and I’ve been watching the US election for a bit. Yet, it feels like I’m watching the Indonesian 2019 election rather than the US election of 2020.
Let’s see: the one who lost the election declared an early victory, then claimed voter fraud, saying they have “evidence” which probably would be dismissed as fake. Said loser also have a solid voter base that mobilized to help “prove” that voter fraud was a thing despite not knowing much of election protocol, which led to some hilarity to ensued. Add in also the fact that fake news were used. The similarity is uncanny that I don’t know whether I want to laugh or be scared.
So far, all that is lacking is both sides tried to heal the nation through a meeting in public and the loser getting a job in the new cabinet. But, Donald Trump isn’t Prabowo Subianto. The latter was a soldier, head of a national political party, and knows when to give up. The former didn’t have much success as a businessman, a controversial (to put it lightly) figure as president, hated even within his own party, and so far had refused to acknowledge the reality.

And i am thinking - how much of a reputation did the United States lose in the last 4 years?
When Mr Modi won in 2014 - Sonia Gandhis Tweet was We accept the verdict of the people. Congratulations to the BJP.
When Jayalalitha won in 2011 and 2016 - Stalin accepted the results without 10 minutes of screaming or accusations.
Same when Karunanidhi won in 2006 and 2001 respectively - not a word accusing him of fabricating elections.
I don't know much about UP and Bihar but to my knowledge at least in the last 20 years - I don't think Mulayam or Akilesh or Kalyan Singh or Mayawati have refused to accept the results of a democratic election. I presume the same with Lalloo and Nitish.

Yet Barely 4 1/2 hours into the Counting - Donald Trump refused to accept the result of the US Elections and began to claim victory for himself. It was like a $ 1 Million lottery having the numbers 14300919 and Trump got 14389537 and screamed out “I got 1. 4 and 3 - so stop the count. I have won the lottery”
He could have said I don't want to comment.
He could have said I believe there were some issues which i will discuss with my legal team and try to resolve
He could have said I will wait until the certification of the results before telling you of my next step.
But - NO!!!!! - He literally called a 172 year process as a Fraud on himself. Accused Biden and the Democrats of stealing the elections in 4 States.

A Candidate who literally threatened to use his Supreme Court connections to steal the results of an election.
Ultimately - I think - My country is 10000 times better. Even Devendra Fadnavis and Siddaramaiah quietly left without a word when their time came to an abrupt close.
The American Democracy is becoming a Global Joke and must be nipped at the Bud.
Hopefully Biden can bring some sense of freedom and peace back into the Country devastated after Four Years of Trump.

As a Romanian citizen… doesn't make that much of a difference if you guys elected either one of them. The US interest in Romania is mainly as a military bridgehead. All your presidents got along just fine with all our presidents. Trump welcomed Iohannis with all the appropriate state honours. I'm expecting Biden will get along with Iohannis as well.
As a British citizen… I see Biden as a return to normality. Trump had started to boss us around already (lower food standards, sell NHS, get a no-deal Brexit done), I wasn't looking forward to this proud country becoming his bitch.
