New York had a horrible response in relation to Covid in nursing homes, which was the main reason why they were trying to stop the spread. I think everyone was pretty clear that although young people might recover, older people do not, therefore by restricting everyone else while ignoring the whole point of flattening the curve is counterproductive.
Not to mention the governors own brother was caught out multiple times without a mask while infected and tried to stage his emergence from quarantine after the fact.
