This was supposed to be the year that China’s export machine began to stall. President Trump had imposed broad tariffs on Chinese goods. Countries like Japan and France pushed companies to shift production from China. The pandemic had crippled China’s factories by the end of January.
Instead, China Inc. has come roaring back.
After reopening in late February and early March, China’s factories began an export blitz that is still gaining steam. Exports soared in July to their second-highest level ever, nearly matching the record-setting Christmas rush last December. The country has grabbed a much larger share of global markets this summer from other manufacturing nations, entrenching a dominance in trade that could last long after the world begins to recover from the pandemic.
China is showing its export machine cannot be stopped — not by the coronavirus and not by the Trump administration. Its resilience lies not only in the country’s low-cost, skilled labor and efficient infrastructure but also in a state-controlled banking system that has been offering small and large businesses extra loans to cope with the pandemic.
The pandemic has also found China better placed than other exporting nations. It is making what the world’s hospitals and housebound families need right now: personal protection gear, home improvement products and lots of consumer electronics.
At the same time, demand has withered for many big-ticket items exported by the United States and Europe, like Boeing and Airbus jets. And with most economies except China’s now mired in recessions, demand has also faltered for the commodities that most developing countries export, particularly oil.
Families all over the world are sprucing up the homes they are now stuck inside. They have been buying everything from computer screens and stereo systems to power tools and home saunas — many of which are made in China.
Hongyuan Furniture in the southern city of Guangzhou has hired 50 extra workers after export orders for its home saunas more than doubled this year. A short drive farther south in Zhongshan, Star Rapid has stayed profitable, making robot casings and quickly producing high-tech models — a process known as rapid prototyping. And a few miles to the west, Trueanalog has ruled out moving production of its top-end stereo speakers to the United States, its main market, or to Vietnam, where wages can be even lower.
The strength of China’s export machine complicates the Trump administration’s push to reduce the trade deficit — the gap between what the United States exports and what it imports.

China won the trade war.
China will win the tech war after a bit of struggle and perseverance. After China get everything domestically without relying on international imports, Anglos are fucked. All the news article are writing about the death of Huawei. Anglos only think short term, but once Huawei get everything in order, we see CNN or NYTimes print "Huawei rises from the grave, it's game over for the West".
After all, struggling through tech innovation and hardware innovation for a tech war is better than struggling through trenches and mine fields in an actual war.

They could easily manage without other nations, once you factor in world trade however, they are absolute juggernaut.
The US are petrified, genuinely fearful of what now looks inevitable. I can't explain how a nation with such a tight and ruthless grip over the world for so long can be so incompetent.

Not just lower cost, the American clients cannot find anybody else who can produce the same quality as Chinese companies:
Wang Tianxiang, manager of the TISCO Steel Precision Strip Company, says they have an American client who buys up to 140 tons of steel products each month. But after the US imposed a 25-percent tariff on imported steel products, due to cost concerns, the client suspended business with TISCO for about two months.
“But it turned out that they couldn’t find another supplier as good as us. They believe China’s products are irreplaceable in the global supply chain. They prefer Chinese suppliers because our products combine good quality with the best prices,” Wang said.

China is not an export-driven economy anymore. Exports are only 15 percent of the ecomony. Most of the growth is driven internally. The US has trying doing everything to undermine China if it was simple as simply just bringing back factories or just ''simply decoupling'', they would done it by now.

yes. but the percentage of exports varies across sectors and products. some Chinese sectors would suffer deep losses if exports dropped off significantly.
eg, if Huawei could only sell to the Chinese market, it would have to radically curtail its R&D due to a huge drop in revenue. for advanced technologies, the issue is not so much profit but rather revenue growth for further R&D.

I can't think of any single thing that the US can do to stop Chinese exports from going to other countries besides a massive naval blockade. But even then, the US would face international condemnation, since not is only harming the Chinese economy but the economies of dozens of countries whose top trading partners is China. The US would need to become a parish state to pull it off.

indeed. that's why the US is shitting its pants. china is not like the USSR -- it cannot be cut off from the rest of the world like in the cold war.
the logic of markets is evidenced by Huawei penetration in Europe. even though the US can corral most of the five eyes to forbid Huawei, for Germany and the rest of Europe and especially southern Europe, they are all competing with each other, and are each looking to gain an advantage. all it takes is one country to adopt Huawei for others to get in on it, or they lose out against their regional neighbors, and against global competition. there is just too much advantage and profit to be made trading with China. especially when china makes special allowances for those under its umbrella of influence.
what would be funny to see is if some african countries get 5G faster and better than five eyes like UK or australia.
australia will become, to borrow lee kwan yew's words, the 'white trash of asia' if it continues down its path of aggression against China and thereby biting the hand that feeds it. that it goes against its own broader national interest in following the anti-China stance of the US indicates that the political establishment must be getting advantages in backdoor ways, such as graft and kickbacks from military purchases.

How much they stick to that is of course the question. However, friends of mine living in China have noticed real changes. Chinas good governance, its growth and development, will continue forever until the day it adopts "democracy". As soon as "democracy" gets its filthy claws sunk in to any government, thats when we begin to see policies that serve the uber wealthy, and the decline of a modern nation. If you want China to become a democracy eventually, then set an example. Most Chinese people used to admire the West so much, but how the western democracies, especially the US (the once beacon county), have performed in recent years has confused them, including many educated young people. So, I think the West needs a better way to engage with China. After all, the West won the Cold War mostly through soft power.

As anyone but our so-called president could have predicted, bashing China on social media and putting up tariffs was never going to result in huge trade concessions or really any concessions at all. Given that the majority of American (and many European) companies have their factories or import parts from China, it shouldn’t be surprising that this would continue; if anything, the current virus-caused recessaion would make it even less likely for any manufacturing to be created in the US, as many companies are trying to survive. Even those who are doing well, such as Apple, have so much of their manufacturing invested in China that it’s hard to see how that basic structure would change, even if they might bring back an aspect or two of their overall production to the States. Would it ever make sense from a corporate point of view, or even a national one, to abandon all the factories, with their sophisticated technologies, to the Chinese ?

Nearly all of China's leadership are engineers by training. They believe in science and are not afraid to make difficult decisions. The COVID crisis is the perfect example. There were many missteps in the beginning, especially at the local level. However once Bejing got involved, the actions were decisive. Just look at how Dr. Zhong Nanshan is treated in China vs Dr. Fauci in the US. Huge difference.

Although there is much that is problematic about China and her practices, western businessmen might take note of the successes so given. China took the virus seriously and worked hard to contain the pandemic, and then formulated and enacted a strategy to reboot their economy. Their leaders, unlike our current child-President, seem dedicated to a functional society rather than to chaos, divisive twitter feeds, and temper tantrums; so much for Trump’s highly touted business acumen.
In the end, free markets and disruption may create wealth. But they aren’t a substitute for good government, and will never produce the common sense of being necessary for communities, and countries, to survive and thrive. That takes real work.

You ''may" believe that the American dominance in the digital market and tech has anything to do about a free market, but in the EU and elsewhere it is no secret how and why certain trade acts and companies, as well as EU-American laws are opposed. As one German minister put it some time ago: China is regarding their economy smarter than the EU. China is in the digital and software area the only real competitor in the world, by now. Meanwhile, Facebook, Amazon, Apple etc. are called in the EU "American parasites" because they only pay taxes in the US. In the eyes of many Europeans, and I'm pretty sure about Asians too, there's not much difference between the US and China, for good reasons.

In fact, Germany has for long time run a healthy trade surplus with China. Japan and South Korea have done the same for many years as well. Why is the US different from those countries? It is too easy to find a scapegoat to blame for our own problems.

China pretty much looks like US after the Second World War; the determination to win the World. It is going to be China's century, unless robots do same jobs in the US.
