Beijing has ordered the United States to close its consulate in Chengdu in China’s southwestern province of Sichuan. The July 24, 2020, demand was seen as a retaliation for Washington’s order earlier in the week that China close its diplomatic mission in Houston in the US state of Texas amid accusations of espionage.
