China works on an evidence base approach to issues. Since the founding of the modern day China, it went to war against America (plus allies) in Korea, guaranteed the survival of North Vietnam, witnessed how committed the US is/was in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, and from that knows the US cannot win in a long dragged out war that required stationing troops in long occupations. I’m expecting the red meat eating Americans to retort that the American Military has much better weapons, technology, logistical, etc., the continuing with a long list of apple to orange type of comparison and argument. Indeed, I will agree with most of that. However, that does not answer the question posted. That’s because China never did and probably never will want a global fight with America. It is not the Chinese culture to have a conflict for sake of a conflict. Chinese prefer not to fight, but must win if needed to be.

The Japanese paid a heavy tuition in WW2 by invading China proper, with its military leadership promising a 6-month victory that turned into a 10-year slugfest that exhausted its economy, and eventually led to the attack of Pearl Harbor, so that Japan can get its hands on natural resources owned by European colonialists and the US. China tied down the majority of Japan’s army, and Japan wasn’t a weak country militarily.
One would think that McArthur would’ve learned from Japan’s mistakes as a conqueror, but his hubris got the better of him. He defied presidential order and ventured toward China’s border, much believing that China is bluffing in her warning of not having foreign power occupying her territory again or share a border. When he got his ass handed to him, he appeal for the use of nukes. Glad he was canned. It’s obvious he did not care much for humanity. My point here is not to degrade America’s military, but to make a point that from 1950 - 80, those are the years that China is at its weakest. if past presidents didn’t want to get tangled up with China then, why would current and future presidents want to mess with the current China that is 2nd in economic power that is responsible for 1/3 of the world’s productions, possess respectable military hardware, and even surpass America in certain technologies.
The direct answer to the question is that China does not have to beat America at battlefields far from home, but just to defend against an American invasion or blockade. With that role, China is more than capable of doing so with an increasing modern and sizable army. China will not seek a fight, but why should she be afraid?

MIlitary might is not merely an extension of strategic (nuclear) or tactical (drones, etc.) hardware. Military expenditures and preparedness must be backed by political will to see any potential engagement through, which is always difficult in a republic or democracy where public opinion and short attentions spans are susceptible to change and vulnerable to evolving propaganda from many sources.
America has for more than 100 years only been able to effectively project force in situations where the American citizenry is mobilized and fever-pitched to “win” political objectives, and has failed whenever the projection of force is deemed tactical without a clear measure of “victory”.
Unless China declares an unlimited war against a major ally or the US itself (as opposed to a proxy or trade conflict), the strategists in both Beijing and Washington DC both know that American military might is no deterrent to action.

Xiaoming Guo Born, lived and worked in China.
Because China had Mao. After WWII, the US supported Chiang by providing Chiang the most advanced weaponry in the Chinese Civil War. The result of the war is the Loss of China. The US also lost the Korean War to China, lost the Vietnam War that was aimed at China. The US supported India at the Chian-India border war in 1962 and was also lost.
China is the only country that has had wars with superpowers and wins. America and the Soviets never fight head-on-head during the cold war. They had conflict only in proxy wars. Their most head-on conflict is the 1962 Cuba missile conflict. China, on the other hand, fought wars with the American army at the Korea war and with the Soviets army at Sino-Soviet border conflict.
The history is that the US never wins when it is against communist China. Red China never lost to superpowers in military wars, be it the US or the Soviets.
China is no longer afraid of the American military might since 1949. Mao is not afraid of American military might even since the US dropped the atomic bombs in Japan.

That's nice, it's good to have a positive outlook, but China would do well to remember that should they try to take on the American navy they will get a curb stomping the likes of which they will never forget.

The American would do well to know that after a couple of trillion were spent in Iraq and Afghanistan they have little to show for their 20 years effort in those two wars. Didn’t GW Bush said he would never negotiate with Taliban and less than 20 years DJ Trump was trying to negotiate peace with the terrorists.

I don’t think China was ever afraid of American military power.
Excepting the Eight-Nation Alliance
America has never had a military issue with China in the pre-CCP period.
When the CCP took over China they almost immediately went to war with America over Korea, this right after decades of internal war and a Japanese invasion.
Excepting a few crazy people like MacArthur, America has never shown an interest in direct conflict with China, and China has never shirked from one.

China, like many other country in this world, is very very much afraid of American military might.
For god’s sake. US could just ‘label’ China is being aggressive and hence must be taught ‘actions have consequences’. or China is changing from defensive to offensive hense we must send USN to their coast to stop them./s
They have the nerve claiming such things.

Read “art of War”.
Not the recent translation, but the 19th century ones. You’ll realize we’ve allowed China to all but defeat us using the principles of Tsun Tsu. We’ve destroyed our own social institutions. We are constantly distracted by the glitz, chatter and banal essence of our “pop culture”.Morals, long gone.
Our cities burn, people destroy for trhe sake of destruction.
Economy? We handed that over to China in exchange for cheap crap at *Wal-Mart.
China doean’t need to defeat us. We’ve done that for them. The soldier only needs to draw his sword to let the peasantry know there’s “a new Sheriff in town”.

It’s more likely in my opinion that China is no longer afraid of US economic sanctions.
Military? Chinese have had multiple indirect encounters with the US (Korea, Vietnam). After which, China as a non player in major world military conflicts.
If the Chinese change that policy and decided to become a major player in world conflicts, then they’ll need to worry about a confrontation with the US military. it’s probably a chicken-egg question., but they’re not there yet.

Flawed question, please point out since when did China ever afraid of America? Your confident feelings doesn't necessarily meant another's fear.
As far as post WW2 is concerned, US never won in Korea and surely lost in Vietnam. So, in recent histories, when had China been afraid of the US?

To be honest ,some Chinese people are very afraid of the US ,but they were called gongzhi or meifen which means people favored the US customs and laws etc.
There are many kinds of industries in China. We have not given up on the development of any one industrial category. There are many things in our country that can be produced and supplied by ourselves.
This also gives us an absolute advantage in the competition, because the competition between the two countries will inevitably cut off trade issues.
Those countries that are subject to human beings are just because their production capacity is not strong enough to produce on their own, but China is completely different. We have a wide range of industries, and the total amount of export trade is increasing every year, which also means that our country The influence in the international community will be greater and greater. It is definitely not an easy task to sanction China. The most important thing is that we never put key technologies in the hands of others.

I think the main reason is that the United States has dominated the world for too many years. People have been used to the world dominated by the United States, and people are afraid to have a new leader. It's all because of habits.
China's geographic location and land area are destined to be a powerful country. As the military strength continues to increase, the United States is scared. It fears that its status is not guaranteed, so it takes China everywhere to talk about things. It is only a matter of time before the United States is called the world’s largest country. The laws of China’s history also prove that when Country is strong, it loves to fight. Nowadays, the dependence on foreign resources is increasing, and the demand for land is also increasing. 1.3 billion people have to eat. Domestic food alone cannot meet the demand. New energy has not yet been successfully developed, and the demand for energy is becoming more and more important. If you have more land, you can have more exploitable places. Who knows what treasure is hidden underneath. China’s accumulated resources are now sufficient to fight a national-level battle, but new weapons are not enough to counter the US military power, especially the navy. History proves that whoever has strong maritime power is the boss.

Kevin Rivernorth PhD in material science from Chinese Academy of Sciences (2016)
The answer is related to two factors: 1. Where the war breaks out? 2. Tactical nuclear weapon. I will analyze as following.
* Where the war breaks out?
The Pentagon conducted some military simulations at some hot spots near China, such as Taiwan, South China Sea. The results are very negative to the USA.
Of course, you can say this is cliché of the Pentagon for getting more funding from the US Congress. However, it has been a common sense that the US Army cannot defeat China near the borderline of China. Please check the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The US lost both!
So, how about the US Navy? There is a piece of side evidence showing the US navy really concerns the possible loss near the China border. On July 12, 2016, Chinese and American navies confronted each other in the South China Sea (SCS) because of the South China Sea dispute. The United States has used the two aircraft carriers "Reagan" and "Stennis", about 10 destroyers, and about 150 fighter jets of all kinds. But the Navy even dares not to enter the South China sea, as shown in the following picture. From the picture, you can see the Navy dares only send three small destroyers, but keep Reagan and Stennis out of the disputed area. Most ships of the fleet stay out of the SCS with the Philippines Islands as the shield. After that confrontation, Philippines and other SCS-related countries turned to China until now.

In conclusion, the US military force may have unacceptable results if the cold war because hot war! Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t say the military force of China is stronger than that of the US. I just mean that it can be unpredictable and risky at the hot spots near China.
2. Tactical nuclear weapon.
Nuclear weapons are definitely an option when it comes to the naval battles because the consequences of nuclear weapons used on water surfaces are very different from those used on lands: no radioactive dust, no destruction of massive cities, no loss of civilian lives. The ccp has defined the victory of wars as the most important thing of this regime, as Xi said “determine the survival of the Army and the Party”.

The Net international investment position (NIIP) is the difference between the external financial assets and liabilities of a country. External debt of a country includes government debt and private debt. Publicly and privately held external assets by a country's legal residents are also taken into account when calculating its NIIP. A positive NIIP value indicates that a nation is a creditor nation, while a negative value indicates that it is a debtor nation.

Why would they be? They are defeating the USA in the economic war declared by Trump. And it’s on the way to becoming one of the greatest world powers.
There’s no risk of military war, whatever any US citizen may say or think. If there’s a war it would be an atomic one, which would mean the end of the world, and there’s no way at all the USA could defend themselves against it. Total destruction.
So no matter if the US army, navy or air force capability is superior: it wouldn’t matter. If the Chinese see they are being defeated in those areas they will strike with missiles.
That is why they are not afraid.
That doesn’t mean they want such a war, the problem is the USA accepting they will have to step down from the place they are down, and share power with China. The problem is the USA, not China.

China is frightened by the prospect of a military war against the United States.
But the United States is just as afraid of China in reality.
China has become so powerful today, that a war between the two powers would be long and dangerous for both sides.
The United States and China actually have no interest in waging a military war in which both sides would come out the losers.
History in Europe has shown that in this type of war, it is always a third country that emerges victorious. If China and the United States were to fight each other militarily, other countries would eventually take over world leadership.
The United States and China will not get into this kind of war.
Their war will be limited to the economic and political realm.

But in the long run, we must realize that the United States will lose its total domination. China will continue its rise to power.
The world will become bipolarized with two world powers of equal importance.
The other powers such as the European Union, China, or India will have to find their place in this bipolar world in order to have a global influence.
