Not necessarily true in the case of Iowa. They started 2018 with 3 Republicans and 1 Democrat as representatives at the federal level. After the election it was reversed with 3 Democrats and 1 Republican. It's noticeable there because it's a smaller electorate, and it's probably several different reasons, but states in the cornbelt are going to have a harder time holding on.

they actually do work but not the way trump is playing it. they need to be fairly negotiated. tariffs are how fledgling countries allow local industries to grow. that's why for the last 50 years, western economists have been advocating for free markets everywhere because western companies were the strongest players. in a free market, the strongest player will win. however, tariffs are necessary to protect the weak player. if you can make the rules, wouldnt you want your own team to have a chance to win?
smaller economies cant make arbitrary rules because they cant ever win trade wars against big companies. however, china can and that's why they've had all sorts of rules to favor local companies.

That's what happened in Thailand when the Thai government tried to appease farmers by promising to buy up all of the rice at inflated prices.
The plan was the Thai government would sit on the rice and drive up prices worldwide and then they could recoup the inflated prices they paid the farmers.
Problem was, India, Vietnam, and other countries ramped up rice production as Thailand's rice was sitting in warehouses. Pretty soon Thai rice was rotting in government warehouses.
The Thai government would always announce that China or someone was buying a huge amount of their stockpile of rice only to have China (or whoever they claimed to be the buyer) walk back the amount that was supposedly being purchased or deny the deal outright.

der_Enzigeh
Yup, raw soybeans are a significant player in the value of exports, to the EU. So is liquor and dried/fresh fruit. In fact, if we’re going to get into the bowels of things, the US is the 2nd largest trading partner of agricultural goods. At 9%. Total import value is $11bn, of which $2.5bn is soybeans.
So you tell me, of a market size of $117bn, is $2.5bn a meaningful # for value add?

And China is well aware that US decision-making is more subject to influence by alarmist press reports. Trump, of course, is doing his own bluffing and threatening. And US ag association lobbyists are just doing their usual thing of looking for sympathy and more comfort from the politicians.
Let's all come back in a year and see how the negotiation turned out. My 2c is that there will be a deal that Trump will call a 'uge win and his opponents will call a loss, and in fact will be a very minor win.

what other countries can just up-and-plant an orchard for 1.3 billion people?

krystyin
It is economics, supply and demand, due to tariffs they are forced to not buy from the USA. This does not mean that demand is gone - this causes prices to rise (i.e. soy beans and strawberries) which means next year international farmers will plant soy and this year china may buy strawberries from mexico to reduce prices. As far as orchards - china is already in the top 3 in terms of fruit trees (i.e. apples, plums, etc).

edc582
I think you're being funny, but this commenter has a point. It's that if you want to keep people in fresh fruit year round, you will have to have supplies of strawberries, apples, etc... all around the globe. Seasonality means that a lot of the tree fruit we buy outside of the North American growing season has to come from somewhere that it is in season. This is usually South America. Chile provides North American grocers with fruit they otherwise may not have access to.
Things like grain are obviously able to be stored for a much longer time. Fresh produce could experience massive amounts of price flux while we wait to see what the new trade patterns and partners will be. Demand will still be there, but supply may be stretched.
