I also think no one should ever brag about beeing the best country. Just like humans you dont know if there is someone better that you. The only thing that matters is trying everyday to get better. Excuse me if I sound like your Grandparents calender but its true. Try to become the best instead of stopping at one point and saying you already are.

No need to excuse yourself you are 100% spot on

Republicans have been pounding the idea that patriotism means you can't say anything bad about the US otherwise you hate the country. I get accused of being a communist on FB regularly for pointing out how behind the rest of the world we are in a lot of areas and how we could all be living a better life.

or they're like THEN JUST LEAVE!! like it's a completely unhinged and rabid worship of the country.

The people who typically rant about "USA #1", usually haven't been exposed to the world outside their state, possibly not even their county.

Or either they go to a country for vacation without actually knowing anything about the culture and just downplay how other countries aren't like the USA eye roll

I admit when I was in France I did have McDonald's for a meal because I wanted to see if it was different.

Honestly I thought Swiss McDonald’s was interesting. Also I was low on cash and couldn’t afford much else in Luzern

When I studied abroad in Spain (a small town as opposed to Madrid or Barcelona) the university literally separated the Americans from the other international students because they assumed we wouldn't socialize with the others. Huge bummer because all of us wanted to meet new people and that made it really hard for us to do so, and we really had to make an effort to be involved with the events that we're going on.

As a non American, the US used to be seen as this great land to live "the American dream" where people dreamed of getting out of their country to live the lifestyle of the rich and famous thanks all the Hollywood movies and famous stars.
irishseas
Definitely. I think almost every non-American wants to live in the US when they're young at some point. Probably because we mainly consume American media, and the US is such a big entertainment hub. Then as you grow up, you start thinking, "wait a minute, that scenario is literally unfathomable in my country..." and you start lowering the rose-tinted glasses.

Even from Canada it was a shock. Out of university I got my first job in New York City with what I thought was a crazy salary far more than my friends who remained in Canada. They were so envious and all asked me to hook them up for a job too. After a year I was no farther ahead of any of them because the cost of living was far higher than I anticipated.
I left the higher pay to be back in Canada.
I will say I met great people though...just as friendly as Canada.

Yep as a kid it was always some awesome dream that you'd move to the USA, everything was better there.
Honestly right now, as much as Australia has its political issues too, you could not make me move to the USA.

American here. I’m basically running on nostalgia at this point. As children we’re raised to think we can literally be whatever if we try hard enough.
Then we grow up and get bitch slapped with the realization that most people in charge are just looking out for themselves (both government and business). If you don’t know the right people, then in most cases it doesn’t matter how hard you try, and knowing the right people can often cost a lot.

There are quite a few of us that absolutely do not think we're the greatest country in the world.
Especially with the response to this pandemic.. From the president to the people that voted for him, at least I want out of this uncaring hateful country.

Also most of europe forgets that america is the size of the entire european union and gb. They talk a out all of our problems on the scale of their countries and try to do a direct.

BTW, EU population - 446 million, US population - 328.2 million

Totally agree. As someone who has traveled all over the world as well (22 countries), America is not the best nation, but it is damn well near the top. I think Reddit at an average is very anti-America and their policies. Reddit loves socialism and we are not a socialist state. There are some great socialist countries, but it doesn’t mean it’s the only and best way to live.

I've seen a lot of comparisons like these whenever America is criticised. "Oh well, we're way more free than China" or "our poor are at least richer than Venezuela's."
hawkeys89
Interesting take I also travel around the world for work/personal and disagree with you strongly. While we’re not a perfect country. However, I think we’re near the top for being the best. First our poor are the richest of the poor around the world. (Living in a bad area of Chicago is a lot better then living in the bad area of Istanbul.) Our healthcare is some of the best in the world. I can guarantee that you don’t want to to go to the doctor in Russia. I’ve come back to the states from Switzerland to have surgery because the doctors there don’t have the experience. Not to mention another doctor I consulted with in Austria advised me he would just amputate. Thirdly diversity. Our country is very diverse with many cultures. People seem to think racism is widespread in the USA. However, from my experiences and discussions with others racism is very prevalent and more outward across the world. If we were such a bad country why do we have people from around the world trying to get a visa?

The people touting the America #1 thing are annoying.
But imo, the people also claiming that the US is the worst place, are more annoying.

Without having grown up here it would be really hard for me to express, or anyone having grown up elsewhere to understand, the level of propaganda we're exposed to from preschool on through life. "The United States of America is the greatest country on earth" is a phrase you hear a million times and learn before you even really know what a country is. You certainly don't know why, and no one ever explains it beyond other vague buzzwords: freedom, liberty, be whatever you want to be...
I grew up in a private fundamentalist Christian school in the 1980's, so a lot of my programing was about how much better we are than the Soviets and how Communism means you can't have a Bible. Somehow ( whether expressed directly or inferred, I can't recall) we took that to mean than only America had such complete religious freedom, and Christianity was either outlawed or at very least discouraged everywhere else. That's why we had to send these missionaries all over the place. It seemed as much about spreading Americanism as Christianity.
But I don't want to give the impression that if you're not in that sort of an environment you miss out on the propaganda - which is not true at all. Just, that's what my experience was through age 12. After that I got the standard American propoganda experience: "American Dream" "Be anything/anyone you want", "people come from all over the world because success can only be found within our borders. How lucky are you to already live here?!". The overriding theme of all of it though is "all hail capitalism" and how such messaging shapes your view of what success is, or whay it means to be a great country. When it comes down to it, the message is that the US is great because of our military, and our economy. And your life is good and meaningful if you get rich and powerful too. If not...if you end up poor or lower middle class, then it's not just that you failed, YOU ARE a failure. There is only one way to be here. Only one value system, and try as hard as you like to break away from thay mind set, but good luck because they've been programming you with it since they sat you down in front of your first Saturday morning cartoon. Get rich, or feel bad.
I don't know, maybe it's just me, but that doesn't feel like freedom.

Exactly!
Its always this awkward bit, especially now, that I can get tested for COVID for free if I want to, or that I'm not getting laid off due the crisis because my country handled it a bit better.
Oh, also, the weird-as-heck units. Just use metric system already. 56° isnt cold, 56° is deathly hot to the rest of the world.

Hi, Im cuban and though I live in a country that has a large and not so friendly history with the USA, I think that the USA is absolutely awesome! Its a land full of art (music, books, painting, sports, cinema, etc.), freedom, beauty, dreams and so much more.
Its a country with so much potential and that has nothing to do with its history or achievements or whatever, its about the mountains, the forests, the animals, in one word: the lots of biomes you can find there.
All those things I talked about in this firsts two paragraphs is what makes USA so amazing and I personally would definitely LOVE that the United States of America would become a country that helps others to grow and heal of the wounds that history have left behind and that welcomes anyone to enjoy its beauty and all the good things it has to offer.
I'm glad to tell you that my own country is not great at all. Yes, we have free education; yes, we offer free medical attention; yes, we help other countrys; but Cuba is no where near of being perfect. First of all, as an student I can say that school here is a SHIT, there're lots of good things about the cuban education but there are also lots of horrible stuff. We care way more about getting good marks than we do about studying and learning new things; we don't care about Revolution, we just wanna LIVE OUR LIFES; they say we students are the future, haha, yeah, they want us to continue with the same ol' crap the generation of Fidel started (do you know what I mean?). Maybe Im talking for myself but Im sure Im not wrong.
I'm not an anti-revolutionary but I would want my country to stop bragging so much about REVOLUTION and just do what is right and necessary for us to grow as a nation but sadly, I think my country is too damn drowned in its own history to know how to do that.
At last, I know what you mean, 'cause I have the same opinion about my country.
I feel you bro ;P (kidding).
PS: I would give you the BEST AWARD but I dont have coins.

I grew up thinking this. Now I call it ignorant pride.
I’m Vietnamese. I came here because the US destroyed Vietnam. But the Vietnam of today is mostly rebuilt and on its way up. I wish that America had not destroyed Vietnam, and I had grown up there, inheriting my family’s legacy. But even considering that America did destroy it, I still wish I had grown up there, helping it rebuild, and suffering along with my people
Today I have a relatively ok life in the US. But I’m surrounded by racist idiots. This country is 90% shit to anyone with Asian heritage. We try so hard to live our lives with respect and dignity, to raise our children and contribute to our society. But the society is hateful, ignorant, selfish, racist. If it’s not hating people from one continent, it’s hating people from another. We are antagonistic towards every country that does not bend to our will. We are antagonistic to the people living in countries that do bend to our will.
And now in time of coronavirus, it is plainly clear that we will screw each other, all doing everything we can to not get screwed. Sheesh... the toilet paper fiasco is evidence how disgusting a people we are.
