As someone that lived in Shanghai for 6 years, I think many Chinese cities easily rival the most advanced cities in the west. They just move at a much higher clip than we do. There's always some new technology that is being rolled out or tested there which, for the most part, is designed to improve the lives of the people there. For example, I saw a clip of an apartment building elevator that already added a touchless elevator system using hologram technology. Something like that would never happen so quickly here.
Everyone talked about how China's facial recognition system for tracking movements of people was bad but now it is showing its worth with contract tracing for pandemics like this one.

We had at least 2 entire months where we could have been doing a fraction of what they did - like at least have tests, respirators, gowns and PPE gear for our first responders.
instead we postured and said it would go away in the summer, stuff like that.
Maybe we should invite some of China's strategic planning and public health folks over here to sit in the briefings?
