As I sit here in my apartment in Guangzhou, Guangdong province China, I see little reason for people outside of China to panic. I have been here in Guangzhou during the entire Coronavirus, a city of 13 million people (Wikipedia). The province, Guangdong, has over 105 million people.
There are 1349 confirmed cases in this province alone, the second-highest confirmed cases in all of China. Guangzhou, the city, has 346 confirmed cases and off that, there are 2 confirmed cases in my immediate apartment complex of Pazhou New Village.

There is no panic buying. In fact, the shops here are fully stocked and I have been doing regular grocery shopping every 2-3 days, never once has there been any shortages.
There is no panic on the streets. Yes, there is a lockdown that is restricting the entry points to the apartment complex and yes there are temperature checkpoints at the apartment complex entrances and the shopping center and supermarket and even independent shops that are open, are performing these checks on people that wish to enter. However, there is NO Panic going on whatsoever.
As far as I am concerned, the worst is over in Guangzhou and business is getting back to normal.

We have all seen the Jia You China videos by now from Wuhan, and I suspect that is an indication that Wuhan is doing as good as can be expected considering their more intense lockdowns.

Michael. I agree with you so much. The last few weeks I was with my family on an extended stay in Tianjin - came back to Beijing’s yesterday and now under 14 days quarantine!! In Tianjin we were temperature checked two or three times daily - but as you say, there was no panic - no panic buying. - just a resilience indeed much cheerfulness that is the norm with most Chinese people. On the expressway when we arrived at Beijing’s southern border with Tianjin there were quick temperature ID/passport checks then onwards towards the Capital. Reaching Beijing, I saw a steady flow of people were heading into the shopping/dining area after going through temperature checks. Some people were out jogging on the side streets. bakeries, convenience store, supermarkets open - but no panic to be seen anywhere!!
We had to fill out questionnaires before getting back into our compound and do of course the temperature checks. Food and other essential bought on-line delivered and collected from the compound’s gates, which is the norm presently.
Now, keeping busy in our Beijing apartment. Fascinating times, but again no panic!

Hi Bruce Connolly, it's great to see the nation banding together to get through this challenge with such calmness and togetherness. Whilst it is inconvenient for my business, it has felt like an extended holiday on the tail end of the Chinese New Year. I must be honest and say I did there for a few days start to feel the stress of being at home, but as the days and weeks have passed and I have used the time to think deeply about the challenges and how I can leverage this time for the best, its become less stressful and I can really take a deeper look at how the Chinese are also dealing with this challenge. Its inspiring to see so many just get on with life in the face of such a huge challenge. For that reason alone, I am glad I have stayed put in China, it's given me an even greater respect for the Chinese spirit and their fortitude in the face of extreme challenges.

Ian Robert Wickham Fontanini thanks for your always positive views. You are right, we should all take a deep breath of fresh air. Panic is not the answer to getting through this coronavirus outbreak. The western countries now need to really dig deep and consider how they wish to get through this. Panic driven, or cool-headed and united, the later far better for a faster return to business and thus economic recovery, sooner rather than later.

Michael, I agree with your assessment. More people out and about for walks. Still a bit of light concern in office buildings, with quite a few people still working from home. But there's no panic and a definite sense that we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I've heard masks may be recommended still til the end of April, which I guess is good in order to keep people from getting too complacent and undoing all the work and sacrifice that was made over the last 1-2 months.  Unfortunately, we are going to have to watch many other countries around the world go through that initial panic and fear that we all did early on.  Let's hope they look to some of us which have lived through this to get some practical advice and help remaining calm.

Hi Matthew Clearfield, agreed mate. more and more people can be seen out and about for walks, and shopping etc. Definitely we are in the final stretches of this now and I agree that by the end of April things will be back to normal and masks no longer needed. I agree it's necessary to keep the use of masks up so that we don't have a slip up and see a surge in infections until we are well and truly in the clear which I suspect will be when the warmer weather arrives.

I'm based not far from Pazhou. At first, stores' shortages of veggies were a problem, but it only took a week or so to rebalance.  We're fortunate to not have a supply stocking frenzy and hope other countries won't either.

Hi Jon Santangelo, I agree, there were a couple of days where the veggies here in Pazhou New Village were cleared (although still all other non-perishables still available) and it has been plain sailing ever since for the past 4+ weeks. I have heard reports that locations in Australia are already seeing panic buying in the face of a couple of dozen cases, which is concerning to me. If places outside of China are already panic buying in the face of much lower cases of the virus, I can only imagine what it will be like in the coming weeks if infection rates increase in other countries. Staying calm and being realistic is the key to weathering this storm safely from a virus and economic perspective, at least that's my opinion.

Absolutely, the fringe has already started elsewhere. The proliferation of social media just keeps pouring gas on the fire. Thinking back to H1N1 in 09 while still in the states when it was a different time for news consumption - easier to ignore the hype. It is worrisome that if a more deadly pandemic ever breaks out, as we're seeing now, many people can't stay rational. Could see a new demand for online general/public courses on the basics of crisis management (staying calm/acting normal) - where not overstocking or overbuying supplies is one learned essential.

Same situation here in Shanghai Michael Harding 迈克 . Morning rush hour for road traffic actually appears worse as fewer people are using public transport. In my neighborhood near Zhongshan Park we’ve got roughly 70%+ of retail reopened (shopping malls are fully opened). Public facilities are still closed but there was a noticeable uptick in fellow runners and walkers last night along the Suzhou River.

The situation is more or less the same in Shanghai in my opinion. No panic and supermarkets are well equipped at all time.
For me it’s just interesting to see how Germany reacts to this virus, as from what I heard supermarkets are out of stock on noodles, rice and other long storable products.
Basically the complete opposite to China, as there is panic and nervous people all along on social media and some friends have given me the same impression!

Your examples from Germany are the same from Australia, news reports flooding in from across the country of empty shelves and people concerned about what they will do if the virus continues to spread in those countries. Let me add my POV from Chongqing ...... everyone is calm and orderly.  Grocery stores and pharmacies keep things in stock and farmers markets have remained open. Businesses are now in the process of reopening.  Price gouging in a crisis is not allowed by law and the local government has been diligent in following up any complaints. A few stores have been caught doubling the price of face masks, were required to repay to the buyers and are subject to fine.

No panic either in Shanghai although still very limited number of people out and about.... Huangpu district has only had 6 cases so far, but people are still cautious.... Plus this weekend's weather has been miserable.... and kudos to the security guards in my compound that have been providing us with last mile delivery.  The delivery guys have always been the unsung heroes of China, but I hope more people will recognize that these guys have been some of the main warriors in this fight

I also agree that the home delivery people are unsung heroes working literally around the clock to help bring much needed deliveries to people's homes when going out is a major challenge and risk.

James Dooney , unfortunately, I have to agree. It seems only controversy and negativity can capture the media's attention and thus the average person only ends up seeing the overinflated and often plain misrepresented aspects of China. If I ran around Guangzhou making claims of dysfunction and showing scenes from outside a hospital or two with 2-sec video clips that can easily be misrepresented, people would lap it up, but it would be incorrect and misleading to do so. There are many anti-China Youtubers doing exactly that right now. Stirring up the fears of people in the West. Its questionable reporting and downright xenophobic and racist at its worst.

People who have lived in China seem to be the only ones being able to understand this! Everyone else is in a hysteria. Even the people who claim to have visited have a very negative image. However, having lived in China, I think I see the whole thing the same way as you! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Lulu SONG ,I would encourage other nations to take a more pragmatic and less biased view of how China has dealt with the Coronavirus. They may criticise China for all of its wrongdoings, but I would without hesitation praise China for the nationwide solidarity and checkpoints to stem the spread of the virus. Its certainly no easy task in such a large/populous nation and the community spirit and unity has played a very big role, I believe, in helping to control the spread of this virus.

Kieran Holland, I suppose that's what I wanted to try and contribute to the discussion on the coronavirus and the aspect of panic buying and general panic and hysteria about the virus, in Australia. I don't want to say it but I feel that its unnecessary in Australia or anywhere to go into panic mode. The probability of catching this virus or even a severe lockdown, in Australia is very low. I am living through the coronavirus in the second most affected province of China whilst there are many checkpoints and most businesses were closed for the first few weeks of the virus, the supermarkets and convenience stores have been open the entire time. I am concerned that if I say something like "we could take a leaf out of China's book on how to deal with the virus as it begins to affect other countries" I will be branded/attacked and called a Communist Sympatiser or Pro-China in a derogatory sense. China can do no right and the West can do no wrong, yet from my viewpoint here on the ground in China, as I have said, there has been no panic and business is already getting back on track.
