Chinese slang is funny, sharp, and surprisingly relatable once you get the hang of it. The other day, I saw someone asking about the meaning of a slang term in a subreddit, and it reminded me how confused I was when I first got into Chinese dramas and web novels. A lot of these phrases pop up all the time, and if you’re new, they can sound totally baffling.
So, I thought I’d put together a list for y’all- some of the most popular Chinese internet slangs I’ve picked up from novels, dramas, and blogs.From joking about being a “single dog”🐶💔 to calling out someone’s over-the-top “rainbow farts,”🌈💨 these phrases show how playful everyday conversations can be. Enjoy! 😁

中国俚语真的有趣又犀利，而且一旦你掌握了，意外地很有共鸣。前几天我在一个板块里看到有人问某个俚语的意思，这让我想起了我刚开始看中国电视剧和网文时的困惑。很多这些词经常出现，如果你是新手，听起来完全就一头雾水。
所以我整理了一份清单，都是我从小说、电视剧和博客里淘来的最流行的中国网络俚语。从自嘲是“单身狗”🐶💔到吐槽某人夸张的“彩虹屁”🌈💨，这些词都诠释了日常对话能有多好玩。希望大家喜欢！😁

1) Melon 🍉= gossip
origin- stemming from the slang term "chi gua" (吃瓜), which means "to eat melon" and describes the act of people gathering to watch or listen to unfolding drama and gossiping about it.
2) Dog blood🩸🐕= cliched or cheesy, especially a development or plot. Often melodramatic as well.
origin- from early period melodramatic chinese dramas which overused fake blood
3) Single dog 🐶💔= often used by single people to mock themselves
origin- drawing a comparison between being single and the perceived lonely life of a stray dog.
4) Dog food🍲🐶💑= PDA, or displays of affection in front of single people (dogs).
5) Face 😌= dignity/reputation/ honor
origin- in Chinese culture its a complex sociological concept referring to a person's reputation, dignity, and social standing.

1）瓜🍉 = 八卦
出处——源自“吃瓜”这个俚语，意思是大家凑在一起看热闹、讨论八卦。
2）狗血🩸🐕 = 俗套、夸张的情节
出处——早期中国雷人剧里经常用假血，后来演变为形容老套、夸张的剧情。
3）单身狗🐶💔 = 单身人士自嘲
出处——把单身和流浪狗的孤独生活做类比。
4）狗粮🍲🐶💑 = 在单身狗面前秀恩爱
5）面子😌 = 尊严/名声/荣誉
出处——中国文化里的复杂概念，指个人的社会声誉、尊严和地位。

6) Green tea b*tch🍵= A person (usually female) who acts innocent/pure but actually isn't.
origin- The "green tea" is a reference to her clean, refreshing outward image.
7) White lotus🌸= originally a metaphor for a pure or innocent person, but now can be used sarcastically in a way similar to green tea b*tch.
origin- originally symbolized purity and innocence, as the lotus flower grows untainted out of mud. In modern slang, it is used sarcastically to describe someone who acts pure and harmless while secretly being manipulative
8) Vinegar/ sour🧴🍋= jealousy
Origin- An emperor once wanted to reward a loyal official with concubines. However, this official was famous for his devotion to his wife. While traveling in disguise one day, the emperor saw the couple dining together and repeated his offer. The official declined again, saying he loved only his wife.
Annoyed at having his decree refused, the emperor devised a test. He ordered his eunuch to bring a dark liquid in a cup and told the couple:
“If you love your husband so much, prove it. Drink this poison, and I will not force concubines upon him.”
Without hesitation, the wife drank it. To everyone’s surprise, the liquid wasn’t poison at all but vinegar. Impressed by her devotion, the emperor abandoned his plan and instead showered the couple with wealth.
9) Salted fish🐟= a lazy person with no responsibilities
Origin- it was originally a slang for corpse but after a Cantopop song of the same name referring to a person who has given up on their aspirations and is resigned to a listless existence, like a dried, salted fish, became famous, its meaning evolved.
10) White Moonlight🌙= An unattainable, idealized first love, pure and distant — someone you can never truly have, but who always shines in memory.
Origin- The phrase comes from the image of the moonlight: soft, pure, far away, and untouchable. In modern culture, it was popularized by writer Eileen Chang, especially in her novel Red Rose, White Rose.

6）绿茶婊🍵 = 表面清纯无害、实则心机的女生
出处——“绿茶”象征纯净清新的外表。
7）白莲花🌸 = 本指纯洁无瑕的人，现在多为讽刺，用法类似绿茶婊
出处——最初象征着纯洁和无瑕，因为莲花出淤泥而不染。在现代俚语中，讽刺那些表面装作清纯无害，实际上暗藏心机的人。
8）醋/酸🧴🍋 = 嫉妒
出处——一位皇帝曾想赏赐一位忠臣几个妾室。然而，这位忠臣以对妻子忠贞著称。有一天，皇帝微服出巡时看到这对夫妇一起用餐，便再次提出赏赐妾室的提议。忠臣再次拒绝，称他只爱自己的妻子。

9）咸鱼🐟 = 懒惰、没有责任心的人
出处——最早是“尸体”的俚语，但因一首粤语流行歌《咸鱼》走红，歌词形容一个人放弃理想、认命地混日子，如同一条被腌干的咸鱼，后来“咸鱼”指代那些对生活无欲无求、得过且过的人。
10）白月光🌙 = 可望而不可及的初恋或理想化的爱人，永远留在记忆里
出处——来源于月光的意象：柔和、纯洁、遥远、不可触及。在现代文化中，作家张爱玲普及了这个说法，尤其是在她的小说《红玫瑰与白玫瑰》中。

11) Cinnabar Mole❤️‍🔥= A person from the past who left a painful, unforgettable scar on your heart — often a regretful, bittersweet love.
Origin- Cinnabar, a mineral with a deep, fiery red color, symbolizes intensity, danger, and permanence. In the same Eileen Chang novel, the cinnabar mole contrasts with the white moonlight — it’s not about purity, but about a mark that cannot fade.
Eileen Chang’s Contrast:
She wrote that in life, one often ends up with neither the perfect “white moonlight” nor the haunting “cinnabar mole.” Instead:
If you part with your first love, your spouse can feel ordinary — “like a bloodstain from killing a mosquito” — while your first love remains the glowing white moonlight.
If you marry your 'true' love, then someday an unattainable, tempting stranger might become the cinnabar mole, while your spouse feels like “a grain of rice stuck on your teeth.”
12) Cut sleeve✂️👘= gay man
Origin- From a story about Emperor Ai of Han. The emperor woke up one day to find his male lover, Dong Xian, sleeping on his sleeve. Not wanting to disturb him, the emperor cut off his sleeve to leave without waking him.
13) Green hat🎩🟩= being cheated on by your lover/ spouse
Origin- One story traces it back to ancient times. A married woman, having an affair, needed a secret signal to let her lover know when it was safe to visit. She made her husband wear a green hat whenever he was going out, so her lover could recognize the sign and come over without risk of being caught. Over time, the image of a “man in a green hat” became a symbol of being cheated on.
Another theory links it to a law in the Yuan dynasty requiring the male relatives of prostitutes to wear green hats.
14) Mandarin duck🦆💗🦆= lovers
Origin- Mandarin ducks are believed to mate for life and are used to represent wedded bliss, fidelity, and conjugal affection.
15) School flower🌺= the most attractive or popular female student in the school or campus.
Origin- 花 (huā) means "flower". The term uses the metaphor of a flower to represent beauty and attractiveness, applying it to a prominent female student in the school setting.

11）朱砂痣❤️‍🔥 = 指过去某个人在你心上留下了痛苦、难以忘怀的伤疤，通常是一段充满遗憾、苦涩的爱情。
出处——朱砂是一种颜色深沉、火红的矿石，象征着强烈、危险和不可磨灭。在同样的张爱玲小说中，朱砂痣与白月光形成对比，它不是纯洁的象征，而是一种无法消退的印记。
张爱玲的对比：
她写道，人生往往既得不到完美的“白月光”，也得不到萦绕心头的“朱砂痣”。现实是：如果你和初恋分手了，配偶会显得平淡无奇“就像打蚊子时溅上的血迹”，而初恋则始终是那皎洁的白月光。

13）戴绿帽🎩🟩 = 被爱人/配偶出轨
出处——有一种说法追溯到古代。一名已婚女子有外遇，需要一个秘密信号告诉情夫何时可以安全上门。她让丈夫每次出门时都戴上绿帽子，这样情夫就能认出信号，趁机上门而不被发现。久而久之，“戴绿帽子的男人”就成了被出轨的象征。

Origin- It evolved alongside school flower slang creating a parallel image of natural beauty and vitality. The use of "grass" implies a strong, appealing, and perhaps charismatic presence, similar to how grass thrives and grows vibrantly.
17) Male god/Goddess😇✨= very attractive male/female, usually considered an idol or role model of some sort.
Origin- It became internet slang in China to describe a highly attractive male or female celebrity who is idolized or put on a pedestal.
18) Little fresh meat 🍖👦= a young and handsome man.
Origin- Its a buzzword used to describe young, handsome male celebrities, particularly those with a delicate or youthful appearance.
19) Spare tire🛞= a fallback love interest.
Origin- It uses the literal meaning of a spare part kept as a backup in case the main one fails to describe a person kept on hand in case a primary relationship ends or fails.
20) White-eyed wolf 🐺= a person who is ungrateful or even actively hurts their benefactor; in short, one who violates the reciprocity norm.
Origin- Compares an ungrateful person who repays kindness with cruelty, to the predatory, untamable nature of a wolf.

16）校草🌱 = 学校里最帅/最受欢迎的男生
出处——这个词和“校花”一起演变而来，形成了关于自然美和活力的平行意象。“草”字暗示着一种强大、有吸引力、甚至有魅力的存在，就像草一样蓬勃生长。
17）男神/女神😇✨ = 指极具吸引力的男性/女性，通常被视为偶像或榜样。

Origin- Term is used in Chinese novels and entertainment to describe a character who appears kind or harmless on the outside but is secretly cunning and manipulative.

22) Water army🌊🪖= shortened from 'internet water army', refers to people hired online to manipulate public opinion while pretending to be ordinary netizens.
Origin- It refers to the large number of paid online commentators who can "flood" the internet with specific comments and disinformation, influencing public opinion.
23) Rainbow fart🌈💨= excessive flattery, usually by a fan to an idol.
Origin- The phrase became popular as an internet meme, referring to over-the-top, exaggerated flattery directed at celebrities, implying that even their farts would be rainbow-colored and special.
24) Thigh-hugging🦵🫂= to curry favor or rely on [someone powerful].
Origin- It metaphorically refers to currying favor or relying on someone powerful, like a small child clinging to a tall adult's thigh.

For some of them I inferred the meaning when I've heard or read them, like rainbow fart, it's hilarious or school flower.
The mandarin ducks I remember from a Cdrama, I just can't remember which one it was? Love Like the Galaxy? (or was that the one with the "chicken wings"?)
As for the "cut sleeve" - isn't there also an expression, or is it the act of cutting off a part of your garment to "divorce" yourself from a person? Or is that a Korean thing?
....I think I watch too much of these shows....

Yes some the slangs are inferable if you come across them multiple times and they are very funny 😂
About mandarin ducks, it should be present in most historical cdramas, even if its not explicitly mentioned, because mandarin ducks are embroidered on wedding quilt in the wedding room as ita a symbol conjugal bliss.
And yes as the other comment mentioned the act of Cutting off a part of your robe signifies cutting off ties in cdramas(for eg- Blossom - MyDramaList https://share.google/TbVxoixbpfwCh5k67 ),its not a slang per say that's why I didn't mention.

是的，有些俚语如果你多次遇到其实是可以推测出来的，而且真的很有意思😂
关于鸳鸯，哪怕没有明确提到，这个元素应该在大多数古装剧里都会出现，在婚房的婚被上会绣上鸳鸯，象征夫妻和睦。
还有，正如另一个评论提到的，剪下衣角在古装剧里象征断绝关系，比如《花间令》，但这其实不算俚语，所以我没提到。

While we are on this topic I have a question.
I’ve noticed that young women, when someone is criticising them harshly, will be called ‘this little cutie/darling’.
It’s said in a mean way that suggests it is intended as an insult, but it doesn’t really track.
I’m wondering what they might be getting at?
My favourite phrase that made me snort laugh when I heard it was ‘Take a piss and look at your reflection.’ Meaning ‘get real’. I love it, it’s so humbling lol😆

I was watching that short reality companion show to Perfect Match on Netflix (had a lot of the castmates meeting up in an old town for challenges and the like). At one point, someone (I think it was Wang Xing Yue) mentioned rainbow farts and one of his castmates basically told him to stop being so terminally online. I don’t know why that stuck in my head, but I’ve been puzzled by that remark until this post.
Honestly, I thought it had something to do with the oldish “unicorns fart rainbow” meme, but then couldn’t figure out the meaning or why someone his age would say it. So now I feel a little more ancient, but a little less confused. It’s a good trade-off.

I can totally understand the confusion, I was very confused too about many of these slangs when I first came across them.
I eventually understood most of them by coming across them multiple time in (translated) chinese web novels and then I don't remember clearly which but in some high quality translation novel, translator explained the slang with their origins and that got me hooked, so I ended up making a list that I shared 💫

I learnt from WDBTD that touch fish(摸鱼）means slacking. I kinda laugh at that because slacking has a different slang in my country. I’m from Singapore and we call slacking as Eat Snake(吃蛇）
Oh there is this one also Beat bare stick (打光棍) refers to a man who is a single and hoping for marriage. There is a singles day 11.11 which is 11 of November called 光棍节

I also found this out from When Destiny Brings The Demon so it makes me laugh now because he took it so literally that he thought she had a hobby wanting to touch fish and when he brings her the fish she get such an odd look on her face. I also love how later when she’s forgotten him even if she remembers being from the mortal world when he tells her that she used to like to touch fish, she’s like what an odd hobby lol 😂😂😂😂
