Joshua Wong Former Portfolio Manager
I’m puzzled, really puzzled, seriously puzzled.
Not being sarcastic, do free thinkers in the democractic West have memory, at all?
Understand Donald’s ultimate goal is to cut fiscal deficit, understand he doesn’t have many options.
He’s trying to reduce reliance on imports, build domestic manufacturing and improve employment.
But can’t he remember he already tried with tariffs during his first term? Did he succeed? Is he sure it works, even though he already failed four years ago?
The only way to explain it is he’s expecting “overall gains,” by launching trade war against more countries, there could be positive expected value in aggregate. But that’s much harder to calculate.
This is the weirdest thing ever. People do something in the same wrong way repeatedly and expect a different, positive outcome.
It used to be Americans denying things happened hundreds of years ago, decades ago, a few years back, now they are denying what is happening NOW.
From the very top to the very bottom, everyone is insane.
In a sick society, they expect wellness.
Worse than WW3, really.

This is the mindset of the 18th century physicians who had little more in their tool kit than ‘bleeding’ their patients, and who, when their patients failed to rally, prescribed yet another dose. I believe I've read Washington bled out to his death this way.

I don’t see any panic China just decided enough is enough & stood up to them. Sadly in the 70s the US was looked up to & a place people might aspire to move to but it’s lost its way especially in the last 20 years. It lies vilifies others & attempts to drag countries down to its level over improving itself. I have no respect for the US anymore just like I wouldn’t for a person that behaves that way. How he can stand there with made up figures is beyond me, it’s beyond funny now. We are in for a battle of brains against brawn & frankly my 6 year old niece has a better grasp on the world than he does so I don’t hold much hope for the US. To be honest it’s about time someone put them in their place so I am routing for China as the US started this sh#t show.

Trump is a narcissistic idiot playing with the finances of the world. The people who are most going to suffer are those working class MAGAz who voted for him. He has no interest in the proletariat and will do everything he can to extract additional taxes from them in the name of Tariffs. He said ‘Tariffs is a wonderful word’ and what he meant was that you won’t be able to differentiate between tariffs and taxes.

China can and China did.
China can do it again and all day long.
It’s Trump who’s panicking, due to the fear that the world may or may not follow China on retaliation against the US.
The thing is, China has been the target of US tariffs since 2018. We’ve been taking it for longer than anyone else and just like getting a cold or other virus, we’ve become immune to it. The Chinese sectors that were most reliant on the US have already diversified, or de-risked.
American medias reporting on China being reliant on the American market or Chinese economy crumbling, are doing the popular and more profitable thing by selling a false sense of security instead of facts. It would be funny if the US policy makers actually fell for their own propaganda and measures China wrong. China’s economy is actually kind of in the best shape worldwide right now, and the US attacking China would only hasten the demise of its own hegemony.
Try put another 1000% tariff on China and see if anyone would care here.

Consumption taxes (tariffs) affect people who spend money. A lot of money. Used vehicles and consumables like food are not affected. Millionaires and billionaires are the only ones paying income taxes. The vast majority of Americans pay very little if any. The Trump organization pays more income taxes than the bottom 50% of the households in America do. In 2023 Musk paid more in income taxes than any individual ever has in the history of our country. Vilify deadbeats that don’t contribute not those that contribute the most.

that sounds quite cool, sadly it is not true… used cars will become significantly more expensive, as way more people have to buy those instead of buying new ones.
there will be a way smaller market so prices will rise the same way.
regarding food, supplies for farming equipment, repairs, spare parts, oil/and gas, imported fertilizer and such will become more expensive, thus prices for everything they produce and follow up products i.e. bread will be more expensive, not even talking about the food you already have to import…
removing extremely low income taxes, which likely will not even happen, as the tax reliefs for big companies will already eat up the budget, will not compensate
so no, even if you might or not be right on the gross amount on taxes paid, the ones who suffer from the extra burden are always those who are already in trouble…
richer people will probably not even feel a big difference

Southeast Asia would be hit especially bad by these Trump tariffs. Their entire economic prosperity of the past few years was built on being the transition countries for Chinese components to be assembled and sent to the US, avoiding the tariff on China. Trump has just killed that development model and it may plunge countries like Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia into recession. Especially Vietnam.
I expect these countries to immediately move closer to China for more partnership.

Honestly, you might be onto something here. China's been playing the long game with soft power moves and strategic economic ties for years while America reacts loudly to every provocation. Sometimes it feels like they want us to overcommit militarily or economically so they can paint us as aggressors on the global stage. The whole South China Sea tensions, trade war escalations, even tech rivalry - Beijing often lets us take the first visible swing while they've already set the chessboard. Makes you wonder who's really steering the narrative.

Think about how China pushes the 'wolf warrior' persona selectively – they get loud enough to provoke knee-jerk Pentagon press conferences or congressional freakouts, but always dial it back before crossing red lines. Meanwhile they're locking down lithium mines in Africa or building ports in Sri Lanka while we're distracted by carrier deployments. He doesn’t understand what he is dealing with. He thinks in terms of one to one deal making. The global economy doesn’t work like that. The global economy is a complex, multi party aglomerate in a steady state governed by financial woes of share markets which work by 80% on wishful thinking or ducking for cover.
And he just threw a spanner in it.What he also doesn’t understand is that unlike the US economy which is geared towards short term results and profits, the Chinese system is on of long term planning. That means the two will react very differently to something like tariffs. China wii try to absorb the tariffs, the US will try to ride them for quick money.
What he also doesn’t understand is that China has a population of 1.4 billion Chinese who have been working hard on making China great again for the better part of a century, and they are quite a tough little people there and they ALL work fir the better of China. If the US wants to put a tarrif on Chinese goods, China is simply not going to sell the plasma TVs and mobile phones to the US but to the Chinese people at home at much lower price, without a tariff. They have a market of 1.4 billion people.
And if you think the Chinese people are too poor for that, do youself a favour an up your state of knowledge. Just randomly choose a Chinese provincial city like Hefei or Liuzhou and find a video on youtube. Enjoy.

China has just imposed the same 34% reciprocal tariff on ALL US imports to China. On top of the current tariff on certain US imports. That is, some US imports are tariffed as high as 50%.
Now, let us see if it is USA or China who surrender first. I bet it will be USA because USA has both budget & trade deficit.
In summer 2024, there was a monetary war between USA & China (actually Asia incl Japan). By Sept, USA waved a white flag by decreasing its interest rate by 5% that much. Then a group of US experts went to China talking about cooperation.
USA is a hollow country with no substance. What is left for them is just their mouth. Lies. Intimidation/threat. That is all.

What “well-fed Americans”?? Food insecurity in the U.S. has been increasing for a while, and Trump's incompetence as typified by the tariffs will cause grocery prices to soar. Many retirees will be especially hard-hit, since pensions are rare and the 401(k)’s that retirees depend on are shrinking rapidly due to the Trump-caused stock market plunge which has no end in sight. When your income shrinks while the price of everything goes up, tragedy is just around the corner.

While food insecurity is growing in the U.S., the majority of Americans still have plenty of food. Shelters, soup kitchens and food pantries still have food to give out. Many schools are continuing the free lunch programs over summer. BUT, the U.S. has never faced a true famine. China did 60 years ago and over 30 million starved to death. Look at the tantrums Americans threw when they couldn’t go eat in restaurants and how much they hoarded during reduced supplies during Covid. I fear how everyone would act during a real scarcity or worse, an actual famine.

Obesity is often caused by unavailability and/or unaffordability of healthy foods including fresh fruits and vegetables. There are large swaths of the nation where the a only affordable food is high-salt, high-fat, calorie dense fast food like McDonald's. A diet of fast food can very quickly make someone overweight or obese, even at the same time that they are undernourished with regard to vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
Believing that being fat means you are well-nourished is extremely misinformed.

That is absolutely incorrect. American obesity has evolved from American industrial farming coupled with over processed foods and fast foods. Americans are obsessed with easy fast and cheap where the chemicals in the processed foods include preservatives and sugars in so many forms of processed corn syrups and dyes etc. that we don't have a clue anymore what a healthy diet consists of. Unfortunately folks have devolved into forgetting how to prepare vegetables and fresh meats for a balanced diet. The ingredients are absolutely available. So sorry to say it requires more time than a family with two working parents can manage.

It would be nice to read responses from people that were able to remove the lens of Trump hatred, or Trump Worship. It honestly makes your perspective worthless. Who knows how it will turn out? However, anyone with any sense of history would know that something has/had to be done. The destruction of America's middle class, which owned almost 80 percent of the wealth in the 50s and 60s (due to Production and manufacturing increasing blue collar incomes) has been completed. Now that 80 percent is owned by the Banking and Real Estate Industries. It indeed was a great transfer of wealth, based on the removal of sharing in profits by employees. The Netherlands economy was based on this same model in the 1700–1800s. It breeds super wealthy, and a dependant class. They removed the levers of upward mobility. I believe that the direction of the current administration is the correct one. Just not sure if it's possible in the face of the way the World's Economy has become cemented in the current model. Canada's current state is a great example of how countries will eventually die. 10 years ago it was the North American model of strength. Now it lags behind Mississippi for per capita GDP. That seems to be the model that Europe, and the more Liberal politicians are leading countries. The Goose that lays the Golden Eggs is slowly being strangled. If Trump is unable to revive it, this thread will be irrelevant.

USA had no competition in 60’s and 70 ‘s . Technology advantage US Had , has been nullified. In Elecronics and auto manufacturing , US can not be competetive, How Many top ten breands in Auto industry and Top 5 in TV, dish washers , home Appliances etc Are US Made . In EV, already lagging behind rival China . If China and India Had friendly relationship Game would been long over . US companies can still find Market in India . US has big lead in big price items Like AIR and defense, should Stay focused on those and have friendly relatinships with upcoming Powers . For , Trump , it is Zero šum Game . He could be smart and cunning , but lack intellect and analytical thought proces . Shoot first , ask later

Panicked? Oh, we didn't even take this matter too seriously. The equivalent increase in tariffs is just another shoe landing, and that was a long prepared plan. Currently, we are more concerned about how to provide disaster relief in Myanmar, which is more important to us now than the White House. We have also been paying close attention to news related to the former president of South Korea recently, and some people are interested in the extent to which the US stock market can dive, but it has never been the White House.

I don’t see China panicking. I see them responding with an equal tariff - 34% on US exports into China. In addition, China also announced it would put in export controls on seven rare earth minerals, including gadolinium and samarium.
Trump must have meant that the US cannot afford to be hit with a retaliatory 34% tariff from China.

No it is the United States that played it wrong. China is the major supplier is much of the components used to build American products that are then even sold overseas. The tariffs will increase the cost of those components and so American companies will have to raid prices to cover the increased cost of the components used in the products they produce. China buys very little any more from the United States needed to produce products they sell. The foolishness of Trump and Biden in sancitons against Chinese companiens has forced Chinese companies to develope thier own suppliers.
To show how little China needs American product just look at the trade balance
US imports of Chinese goods reached $438.9bn in 2024, or 2.3% of China's $19tn economy, while the trade surplus hit $295bn, a 5.8% increase from 2023.
A lot of what China bought from the US was agricultural and energy. Both can be gotten from other sources.
That people beleive that idiot says a lot about them.

I give you an example of how this works in real life.
Russia has AvtoVAZ car plant. It produces mediocre cars for decades. Because these cars can not compete with others in terms of price and quality, government imposed tariffs and other tariff-like measures.
Result after years of this policy: AvtoVAZ cars are mediocre, and all cars in the country are more expensive.
Trump's policy will do the same thing for internal market of US and divide the world market into 2 parts: US market and non-US market with several countries acting as intermediaries between these 2.
If we talk about how it will work specifically for China, than China will just abandon trade with US and will send goods to other countries.

The retaliatory tariffs is not a “panicked” move. It's something that the Chinese government has debated and aligned on since Trump's first term and into Biden's term. There's still a potential that the Chinese government miscalculated, but the move is thought out and not a panic move.
China's retaliation will cause more short term pain for both countries, but China can tolerate a lot more short term pain than Trump can. It has an annual $1 Trillion trade surplus and a slight deflation. The tariffs might raise prices, but the working class Chinese citizen would still be able to afford the goods. The US has been struggling with inflation. If Trump can't get it under control he's not going to last.

The Chinese have the advantage of over 2000 years of diplomacy and foreign policy experience with multiple nations and leaders. A decision like this for them is a very calculated move. In comparison Trump can’t spell the word ‘foreign’ and no understanding of diplomacy despite being a ‘stable genius’. The Chinese will play him for as long as they need to and then leave him wondering why he didn’t get a result he was after and without a clue as to how and why this happened

What that means is, China did not play his game. Trump expected China to capitulate, to give in and come grovelling to him for forgiveness and lower tariffs in exchange for China dropping tariffs. But the Chinese are clever. They have people who understand economics and power, and they are in a position to stand firm. Look around at anything at home. Much of it was made in China or has parts that were made in China. The US needs China more than China needs the US. The Chinese understand this. Trump does not.
