This is SO telling and absolutely hilarious.
As everyone knows, China funded and built a new $3.5 billion megaport in Peru which was inaugurated 3 days ago.
Blinken, in an obvious attempt to show that the US wouldn't be outdone, announced the next day that the United States will support the city of Lima in building a new passenger train line
BUT, and here is where it gets really funny, when you check the details of this
ew passenger train line, this is in fact Caltrain (the commuter rail line in California) selling its retired diesel fleet to Lima for $6.3 million
So contrary to what Blinken implies, this isn't the U.S. building a new passenger train line for Peru, but a local California train company selling some of its old retired diesel trains... In a deal whose size is more than 500 times smaller than the one made by China.
BRI vs Barebones Railway Initiative?
Anyways goes to illustrate once more how the U.S. still has zero response to the BRI...
[Caltrain recently upgraded to brand new, electric trains, and they are now now selling their old diesel locomotives and railcars for use in Lima, Peru, for $6.32 Million. (The US is not paying to build a transit line in another country; quite the opposite!)]
