China and Vietnam are now in a relatively peaceful period; the main reason is that both sides agreed to resolve it through diplomatic negotiations.
Both sides are wise not to touch each other's bottom line.

As a Filipino, I thank you for this kind of information given by you since this gave me new insights and be awake on the situation in relation to confronting on China, and I agree with you that we need to try harder and stand up on ourselves. But fortunately, we are already modernizing our military arsenal with the help of other countries in order for us to have a counter-defense in case that our country were about to be attacked. I also concede that you said we should also build an artificial islands, but what comes in my mind first that even we were about to build an island, China will still think it that we are escalating the tensions within our relations, and use it as an excuse in order to transgress our sovereignty. I hope that my country and Vietnam will cooperate with each other and build stronger relations in terms on what’s happening on the South China Sea.

It was about China teaching Vietnam some manners, especially in the gratitude area, like to say thank you when someone had fed you when you were hungry, and not pissed in the bowl after you had eaten the food! China used a few gun noises and Vietnam retaliated with the total, almost like an ethnic cleansing of Chinese living in Vietnam at the time. The first step was to confiscated all Chinese - Vietnamese properties, houses and landsand money ( Chinese -Vietnamse were in general better off than the natives, hence they can escaped through boats, as it cost quite a sum to get the space on one of those boats since it was made illegal by the Vietnamse government). The next step was to imprisoned all the men from every family. The third step was the shoved all women and children far away from their homes, to very very remote villages, which would have taken a whole day of walking to get to the next town! And it wasn't the end, every time anyone wanted to go to the town to get stuff that only towns available in bigger markets, they would need to apply for a written permission by the the town’s magistrates! This manner -teaching -lesson prompted the boat people that have scattered all over the world during the early 80s, because people only have two choices - to stay and be robbed of everything and treated as a criminal. Or to use their money and risked their families’ lives to somewhere safer & freer. Some chose to go back to China, whilst others chose to to leave through boats. All that were left would either be in prisons or shoved away to somewhere very undeveloped with just nothing as all of their properties had been confiscated by the Vietnamses government. But, as the saying go, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. The brave will be rewarded and the bully & cowards don't really go far, except to just be a follower and chancer! So, Vietnam cannot “beat the shit out of China”, Vietnam could only beat and bullied the shit out of the defenceless. The same reason why Vietnam couldn't beat the Americans and had needed China's help to beat them!! Day dreaming is good while it last!!

That’s a good analyst, but it’s outdated. Vietnam is important to China because it’s southern border to China with land and sea. It’s slowly less important because China is isolating Vietnam by building rail along Vietnam western border countries. Look at Cambodia, Lao and Thailand are very good relationship with China and allowing China to help on military as well as economy, which is completely cut Vietnam out of inland trading. About sea land, You build island then China can also build island, who can complain about it, also today China naval power is not as decade ago but almost surpass US. One point I agreed with you is about other countries forcing China to use navy by first using it, such as China is using water gun but if someone is first use metal gun then China can respond with the same, which is deadlier. Perhaps India and China fight at border is a good example, only fighting with fist, rock and stick.
