First I will say hat realizing is a first good step, and as a French citizen living in India, i have only one short answer to your question: YES
Yes India is dirty, so beautiful but so dirty, here in Chennai people don’t give a s**t, littering like breathing, for exemple some weeks ago, a neighbor clean is car in the street, not the random dude, some high class (if i can say) and while cleaning the interior he threw everything on the floor like nothing, not even realizing what he was doing.
2 days ago 2 guys smoking a cigarette under my window, chatting, one of the 2 opens a new packet, throw the plastic, then the inner aluminum paper, the the cigarette end, then after while talking he starts to play with his matchbox, cutting the box in many pieces and throwing like seeds to a crop… and one more cigarette ans hop the packet is on the road.As we collect so much crap in front of our gate I just asked the guy what’s up with the mess and he was so surprised, i asked him to take it back and to find a trash, he was shocked. Like magical fairies are going to clean.

Yes i read so many posts on Quora by philosophers, researchers, highly educated persons with slideshows and stuff telling it’s because of the system, because of the lack of processing facilities..
No it is not, There is something deeper, something in my opinion who touches at the old thing of castes, an old type of education: don’t touch it’s dirty, someone will clean.
but that’s not all, there is certainly more, what else can explain that, what logical explanation can excuse an individual to pollute, and throw trashes at his own feets, to step in the trashes at every moment, i don’t understand, i don’t get it honestly.
it’s everyday so sad.
I posted here some while ago, 2 friends came here (Chennai & surroundings) for 2 weeks, the travel of a lifetime for them, night before going i asked the the pro and cons of India, In the pro came the Indians and the encounters they had, and on first place came: it’s dirty, and yes my friends it’s what they are bringing with them back to France, what they will remember all of their lifetime, what they will share with their friends.
Sad.

When I was younger, maybe 5 years ago, I was waiting in a real estate agency to hand in an application for a house. A desi family came in and immediately started complaining to an agent about their bond not being returned. I tried to mind my business but I was listening in to the conversation as it went on. It went something like this.
The Dad: “Why did you not return bond? We vacuum and took things off walls before we moved out, what did we do wrong?”
The agent: “Take a look at this photograph and tell me you cleaned everything”
I looked up and saw a photograph i could not believe. There was a toilet bowl that was BLACK from urine and poo build up, and a shower that had only two pale cream spots where they had stood in the shower, the rest of the shower floor was deep brown from all the mess.

The wife then said: “You want us to clean that? But its filthy!.”
I couldn’t believe it. These people looked well off, well dressed with mixed traditional and business wear, with a nice car outside, maybe first generation with a young boy with them, and yet they refused to clean their own toilet to the point it was FILTHY. I didn’t understand how they could even tolerate being in that room let alone using it.
Needless to say the dad got furious, the kid started crying and looked embarrassed, and they left without their money. Both me and the agent shared a look like “what the F was that?” and we got on with our day.
Now i lived with a second gen Punjabi dude at the time called Ribhu, and i came home to tell him about this and ask wtf the deal was, and he was like “yeah man, its more common than you think, when you’re in a certain class if you’re raised in it long enough people literally don’t clean up after your shit - thats other peoples jobs from a different caste, or maids etc”
I just couldn’t understand that mentality.

I travelled to India a couple years later for most of a year to understand better, and I wanted to make a difference to peoples lives. I wanted to understand the people better. I thought surely things weren’t that bad. I was naive.
From a train I saw a dead man being eaten by crows, bisected by the tracks.
I saw a man take a shit in a ditch, do one wipe with a piece of cardboard off the ground, walk off and then sit down and eat a rice biryani next to me at a cafe with his bare hands hands 15 minutes later.
I saw another man swimming in the Ganges about 30 meters from the corpse of a dog. I saw a ridiculous Lamborghini in Mumbai drive over a mans foot and that man walk barefoot bleeding through muddy streets after cursing out the driver. I saw a guy handing out lassi on the a corner from a chilled container with BLACK MOULD on the edges of the tub. I watched a kid sucking milk direct from a cow with ticks and sores all over its body.

I saw the most cringeworthy, obnoxious displays of lot of money, power and status side by side with absolute human misery I thought existed only in history books.
I met a 14 year old girl whilst volunteering with a treatment centre getting treated for STD’s, rumoured to be from repeat rapes from local men, and when asked about sex education she had never even seen a man wear a condom in her life. I treated women who had miscarried and due to lack of medical care had septic shock from a dead foetus STILL INSIDE them, and apparently locals thought she was literally cursed and denied her access to transport and food.
I helped build a well in northern India for a medium sized village, with some VERY weird and loud Christian American do gooders who were on some kind of poverty tourism thing trying to get into heaven quick, but I stuck around a week later after they left on their bus and the locals had filled that well in because it was more important that more dumb Americans come back and spend money locally than people have free access to water the water.

In the month before I left I watched unx organisers be beaten unconscious by cops for protesting coca cola poisoning an estuary and killing crops. I also met a hindu guy who bragged to me about beating a muslim dude to within an inch of his life for speaking to his sister at university, and acted like I was a pussy when I didn’t think that was funny.
India is a beautiful country but I was never the same after I came home, and i don’t think I can go back without needing to see a psychiatrist.
India has a problem, and it is a lack of compassion and abundance of ignorance on all levels, in all walks. Some of it is simple lack of education, but most of it is wilful.
Not only is bad hygiene endemic in India, in virtually all provinces and areas, but corruption and inhumanity is the cause. People don’t care about other people outside of their immediate family or in-group and on a fundamental level that is what is wrong with that country. Why wash your hands if you don’t care about getting anyone else sick? If they die, big deal, as long as its not you. Racism is endemic, sectarianism is out of control, nationalist poison is everywhere and the poor are played against each other by the rich, governments and corporate interests at every opportunity. and every time, they fall for it.
This may be incredibly ignorant, what i’ve written, and I may offend a lot of people, but that was my true take away from living and working in india for pretty much a year. Yes, India is incredibly unhygienic, but it is also Incredibly cruel.
